TheHeretic -> We'll reroute aircraft around a volcano, but not a warzone??? (7/17/2014 4:42:21 PM)

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/ukraine/10975208/At-least-six-Britons-among-dead-in-Malaysia-Airlines-crash.html

First came the horror for the dead, but then, who the hell routes passenger planes over a little spot on the map where people with cold war leftovers are shooting at each other?

ThatDaveGuy69 -> RE: We'll reroute aircraft around a volcano, but not a warzone??? (7/17/2014 4:49:31 PM)

Volcanic ash is very bad for the engines of a plane. Not only does it damage them internally but it can make them stall in flight.
A war zone, on the other hand... Oh wait, never mind.

It's been a very tough year for Malaysian Airlines.

KYsissy -> RE: We'll reroute aircraft around a volcano, but not a warzone??? (7/17/2014 5:03:51 PM)

I questioned what a commercial plane is doing over a war zone elswhere on the innernayet.
I was told that at 30,000 feet it is out of range except for the most sophisticated ground to air missiles.
Which says a lot about what brought it down and where it came from.

That is if it is proven to have been shot down. I think it was, but there are other possibilities.

I don't fly all that often, but I have heard a pilot on the speaker, saying that we were going to go around some nasty thunderstorms up ahead, and try to find a smother path for the plane.

Back to the OP - wouldn't you just sort of expect that airlines would pretty much by default re-route their planes away from someplace like that? Even if they don't have hi-tech missile systems ya just never know when some hot-shot-top-gun-wanna-be pilot might get a little trigger-happy. It's like this was a very avoidable incident.

Yep. I've heard that.

No. It doesn't. All 3 sides in play are in the remnants of exactly where the most sophisticated ground to air missiles got developed and deployed, and all 3 sides have the same weapons. Either someone did something incredibly stupid by accident, or someone did something monstrously evil on purpose, but the tool that did the job isn't going to tell us jack shit.

Gross incompetence (routing) + evil or a horrible coincidence = hundreds dead.

KYsissy -> RE: We'll reroute aircraft around a volcano, but not a warzone??? (7/17/2014 5:27:01 PM)

It does tell us alot about where it came from, as in, where was it made.
As for who pulled the trigger? Russians? Russian separatists? Or someone else trying to hit the hornets nest?

Sanity -> RE: We'll reroute aircraft around a volcano, but not a warzone??? (7/17/2014 5:27:32 PM)

It looks like it may be a terrible tragedy

I think that is actually the one confirmed aspect in the mess.

Not to be a cynic, but I am going to have to call that plan a major fail.

thats a lot of traffic to re route, but looks like they are doing it now.

Marc2b -> RE: We'll reroute aircraft around a volcano, but not a warzone??? (7/17/2014 6:28:35 PM)

It's the same airline as the flight that disappeared. You know what that means.

Calling all conspiracy theory nutcases! Your holiday has now begun!

Make yourself comfortable folks.

This is going to get very entertaining.

Some airlines are routing around. The FAA is making all US airlines fly around the area (cue complaints about the nanny state intruding on free enterprise).

Yeah, that was the best quote of the newscast.

Barack "Facepalm" Obama.

The Malaysian plane was flying on an active route used by commercial airlines every day. Hours before the crash, Russia closed four airways near the Ukrainian border, including one that was a continuation of Flight 17’s route.

Wasn't gary powers was shot down while taking tourist snap shots at about 80,000'?

Which individual do you think should have on their own initiative, altered the flight path? Of course they would have had to consult with someone at "group think" to make sure this change did not put this and another aircraft in the same place at the same time...maybe that is why there is a group think?
