Gauge -> RE: Kajime powells death by cop caught on tape (8/23/2014 1:24:58 PM)

This is a fast reply.

I have watched this video over and over now. I even went as far as to pull the audio off of it and run it through some enhancement software that I have. From what I have been able to determine, sad as this may be, this was suicide by cop. I also do not think that the police had much choice in the matter.

In the very beginning of the video it is obvious that Powell was waiting for the police to show up. When people got close to him he says:

"Fuck dog, the fuck away from me, the fuck away from me with this shit. I'm gonna [not certain but it sounds like he says miss or kiss the ground or something similar], I'm gonna face [can't understand] do you know who I am? I'm tired of this shit."

Of course, this doesn't mean much because the two places that are difficult to understand may be key statements. However the guy filming says to Powell, "You die, damn." This all happens before the cops show up.

The distance that Powell was away from the cops when the first shot is fired seems to be about 12 feet. Not accurate by any measure of course, but it has got to be somewhere in there + or - a foot or two. The cops get a call for an armed robbery, they pull up with guns drawn of course because hey, it is an armed robbery. Powell begins to approach the police screaming "shoot me" repeatedly, meanwhile ignoring the officers commands to drop the knife and get down on the ground. Powell keeps closing the distance and circles a little to the left into that parking lot. The entire time ignoring the cops commands, he begins to move toward the officer on the passenger side of the car, the first shot is fired.

To sit here and say that they could have handled it differently within the short 12 or 15 seconds between arrival and the shooting, I cannot see how they could. They had no idea what this guys state of mind was, nor did they have any way of knowing. The person who called 911 certainly didn't do a psych evaluation on Powell before they called so how would the cops know? It appears that no one knew exactly what Powell was going to do until he made that statement to the guy filming. I am trying to come up with a scenario that would have made this happen any differently, and I am not sure I can. He just kept coming toward the police with their guns drawn. This is what he wanted, it had to be. Had he just stood there insisting to be shot, the cops would not have shot him, they would have had some backup arrive and the situation would have been very different. But he basically pressed the cops into using lethal force, do anyone of you reasonably expect that if Powell got much closer to the cop that he wouldn't have raised the knife? The kid wanted to die.

It is fucking terrible but the entire thing took 12-15 seconds to happen. Had the cops had a little more time and had Powell not just closed the distance so quickly, there may have been options.

Time to grow up little boy. I'm sorry if telling you the truth hurt your feeling but like I told you, you get what you give and no you didn't call my ideas insane you wrote that it wasn't meant as an insult which always means it was. Grow up and stop the passive aggressive stupidity.

See Ken, there's the problem. You're such a fucking liar that you assume everyone else is as well.

I said "your answer is so insane I can't believe it even coming from you." It's NOT a very complicated sentence to follow.

I also said "That's honestly not meant as an insult. We had some pretty heated words the other day, so I realize it could be taken that way. We just have some wildly diverging ideas as to what constitutes a justified shooting." because I was trying to be polite and avoid any misunderstandings. No passive aggressive stupidity, just a simple statement. Once you threw your little temper tantrum, then I decided I'd be as big a prick towards you as possible, but not before. You're getting what you gave Ken.

And please stop the delusions of grandeur. You're incapable of hurting my feelings Ken. It's really cute that you think you could, but sorry ain't happening.

If you weren't a total physical coward who needs a gun to feel like a man you might know how to deal with things like that.

Ken how typical of you to forget that I once faced down a person intent on committing 4-6 murders when I was unarmed so your can take you idiotic anti gun fantasy and shove it.

You really think he was that far away? He looks a lot closer to me. After he went down and rolled, he wound up right at the officer's feet.

I once worked in a programmers shop where we had a nut case bully that even the boss was afraid of. When someone mentioned to me that we needed to be careful around him I explained that the difference between me and the rest of the office was they all feared the day he would come in and go postal, I looked forward to it.

FR
CNN just explained the 21 foot rule exactly as third wheel and I stated it, actually it made things worse, tactically, for the cop.

Brother's a retired cop? I'm gonna leave this be. All I'll ask is, does he know how you feel about police? If so, must make family dinners... interesting.

He claims that his brother once broke his arm with a blunt object, a nightstick I think, (after being trained as a leo) but super Ken with the broken arm disarmed and subdued his brother.

You do know I have 2 arms right you fucking moron? Have you never even heard of a judo throw?

Any cop I know could have killed you from that position.
three possibilities.
A You are superman
B Your brother is a wimp
C You are lying.

But lets say it is none of the above you do realize that it destroys everything you have said about cops not needing more than a 5' margin of safety. It means that you know from your own experience that this is a lie.

No. You simply don't know shit about what you are talking about. A hip throw is a reasonably simple move to learn and while it hurt quite a lot it did put me on top and let me get the nightstick. If you weren't a total physical coward who needs a gun to feel like a man you might know how to deal with things like that.

And you do realize that my brother and I were horsing around not doing anything serious right? He cracked my ulna by accident.

Before you said he was seriously trying to hurt you, now you were just horsing around. Typical of how you twist reality to fit your agenda.

Well, OK, let's assume Powell was 6' tall. The first shot came as Powell reached the drivers side headlight on the car in the parking lot. Powell takes a step and begins to fall, all things considered, lets just say he doubled over and fell because that is what it looks like, so that accounts for about 4' in distance, he hits the ground and kind of does a somersault. When the body rolls out it is briefly extended, appearing to cover the remaining distance within a foot or two of the officer, so add 6' feet to our 4' and that is 10'.

This is nowhere scientific by any means, it is a simple guess. The officer did back up from his original position and move back to the car, so this is taking into account where the officer was originally and where Powell was shot the first time.

I agree with Gauge on this, and I used more math to come up with my estimate. First, I estimated the size of the squares of concrete two different ways, and came up with 4 1/2 feet each time (the most accurate way was to count the number of red brick laid alongside one of the squares, with each brick being (normally) about 8 inches long). With that number in mind I estimated the length of Powell's steps, toe to toe and counted the number of concrete squares from where the police parked (using the darkened area where cars had driven out of the parking area as a reference point) to get Powell's starting point near the corner of the low concrete wall around the parking lot. That was approximately just over 30 feet from where the cops got out of the car. Then counting the number of steps Powell took before he crossed the wall into the parking lot, and the number of steps after, and allowing for the diagonal direction of Powell's approach toward the passenger officer, I estimated the distance to be about 12 feet at the time of the first shot.

An interesting thing I saw was that although someone mentioned there being 12 shots, I only counted nine, but 5 of those came AFTER Powell was already on the ground.

You should know by now that the number of shots fired is virtually always revised upward, sound worse that way.
