I won't ignore someone who uses text speak ... I am no good in using it back and will use "regular speak". And sometimes I have to try and decipher what is being said.

When online/text communication was first born and used (a hundred years ago, I know), I responded to my daughter with LOL, Mom. She came back with what's so funny? Of course, she was losing me then,
so I responded to her with I was just saying love you lots ... and that's when she told me that LOL meant laugh out loud .... when we use to write letters with pen and paper, LOL meant lots of love.
I knew then and there, text speak was not for me.

Speaking of text speak....

Am I the only who actually never even thinks about using text speak? I've texted with people who are using text speak and I find myself typing out "before" and I get to "befo" before I even realize that I could used "b4". It doesn't even occur to me to use it.

Must be an age thing....damn I must be old.

Generational shift? More like a lack of standards.

For me, the way people write (at least initially) speaks directly to the quality of their education, as well as to how they want me to perceive them.

Of course, being male, there are exceptions. Michelle Pfeiffer, for example, could get my attention using semaphore flags or poorly written Esperanto.

It doesn't occur to me either.

And while I do openly dislike text speak (I just really dislike the way it looks), this Ted Talk gave me something to think about.

I must admit that when an instadomme does the 'I'm a goddess and you're a worm' thing in her profile, but using bad grammar, it looks really, really bad. For some reason I find it embarrassing.

I think your sentiment is pretty common, I don't think we're grammar snobs around here and I didn't take your original post to be grammar snobbish either. But it does seem important to try. okcupid has been collecting data on this subject and wrote a scathing piece on what not to do:

Steel, it looks a bit like the form letter I send out isn't going to be very successful. Now I've factored in the number of messages the /s types get, and allowed for a reasonable response time.

Ok...I admit I am being really dense here....but what is it with "hit"? What does that refer to?

And another comment sort of related to all of this.....I understand that children in school are no longer be taught cursive writing. I guess that's because they spend more time using a keyboard instead of a pen or pencil????

and learning cursive is a waste of time! I fully support that. I see no REAL use for cursive and I didn't at 7 either. I actually was so stubborn I had to get out of "Guidance Class" (I know right...) to go take special handwriting lessons with a teacher.

I still managed to just barely learn it and then never use it again.

Clear communication is essential to me. Grammar is a very useful tool to help us get clear communication without misunderstandings.

After all, there's a huge difference between a panda that eats shoots and leaves and one that walks into a restaurant, eats, and then shoots and leaves. The only way to explain what you mean in this case is through grammar and proper punctuation.

The reason cursive is not taught is because no one uses it. No one in any business is told to hand write a report as opposed to doing it on a computer and emailing it. It would be like apprenticing kids to learn to make buggy whips and then be shocked when they couldn't sell any.

I'm sorry but I could not possibly disagree more. While I don't harken back fondly to the days of getting my knuckles rapped with a three-cornered ruler for making penmanship mistakes, I have been required to take to tests in school by writing with a pen onto one of those carbonless wonder papers. I am so glad that I was able to do it (what we used to call) long-hand. I was pleasantly surprised (as was my professor and department head) that my hand writing is still very legible. I guess Grandma was wrong about me, growing up to be a doctor.

Name a practical purpose for it in this day and age other than "I had to learn it! and I think I'm better for it cause I had to walk up hill both ways to school!"

(I realize that is a gross generalization...please...relax, its cursive we are talking about...)

Well, I guess I can semi-agree with the "it just isn't practical" part but I blame computers and cell phones for that.

I will admit that when I sit down to work (I write for a living these days), I am sat in front of a keyboard.

However, I am one of these "old people" that still enjoys sitting down with some personal stationary and writing a friend a letter. I find it to be a much more personal and almost intimate form of writing; especially in today's fast-food, slick Persian bazaar way of communicating.

Yeah, I'll wear the "old" moniker, proudly.

It doesn't have to be in stupid cursive.
Why are you "blaming" keyboards/computers for anything- does it NOT make your life more efficient? If I had to read some of the waitstaffs writing at the restaurant- I think we'd be out of business a long time ago.

You don't need to blame anything. There isn't a problem that needs blame assigned. I'll still write out my thank you and xmas cards- but not in cursive. Cursive is for suckers!

It may not be practical these days...but even my daughter (who is a bit younger than you) will admit that getting a letter from me, seeing my familiar handwriting, is a very personal, and comforting form of communication. Handwriting is VERY unique, and almost creates the same feelings as catching a whiff of my moms perfume, or driving up to my hometown. It's something I will be sad to see disappear.

My daughter has actually planned a tattoo that was copied directly from a letter I wrote to her, and she's getting it in my handwriting.

I do agree, that within the next generation, cursive will go the way of shorthand. We old people will hold onto it a while longer though!!
