Yep. True, and a shame.

Steel, it looks a bit like the form letter I send out isn't going to be very successful. Now I've factored in the number of messages the /s types get, and allowed for a reasonable response time.

Again, all things considered, are you telling me that 10 years is a bit too optimistic and they probably aren't going to reply?

Do you have cats proof reading for you?

Come to think of it, there shouldn't be any such word as 'layabout'. It should be 'lieabout'.

I have never thought of you as untruthful.

Sorry... I just couldn't finish that shit.

I am a closet grammar Nazi.

I don't directly call people out on their shit, although there is a post in my journal where I just couldn't fucking take "I seek a Dominate" for one more second.

Other than that, if I read a poorly written profile, bad grammar, bad spelling, a total unfamiliarity with punctuation, I just snicker and move along. I don't dissect it - I just have to scan it to get judgmental.[;)]

Unless it's really horrid, in which case I may linger to savor it. [sm=stickineye.gif]

It has been my impression ever since I've been paying attention (and that's been about five decades) that intelligent women appreciate intelligent men who write well.

I agree with this. I try hard to avoid slamming people for atrocious writing but like many other things (dick pics, whining about fake subs) I use it as a screening tool. Many such tools on offer on these sites.

Edit: I just noticed you have a cock pic as your avatar. Sigh.

Grammar is very important. I'm not able to fancy someone who makes glaring, obvious errors when writing. It turns me off.

Inghammar -> RE: Does grammar matter to you? (11/25/2014 11:49:57 AM)

I always use proper grammar and spelling, even when texting.

Me too. But you dress for it as well. Admirable.

MariaB -> RE: Does grammar matter to you? (11/25/2014 12:28:18 PM)

Smiling or even feeling irritated at someone's grammar or spelling before moving on isn't a problem but someone who has to correct someone's mistakes, even if it does take the discussion away from the topic probably is suffering from GPS. I've find it hugely irritating when someone derails a thread to point out a spelling/grammar mistake. It always seems such a condescending thing to do. I can only guess that it makes them feel superior.

No matter how bad the spelling or how egregious the grammar errors, none of that is representative of how smart she is; nor does it diminish the importance of the information she wants to share with her audience. https://illinois.edu/blog/view/25/76120

RockaRolla -> RE: Does grammar matter to you? (11/25/2014 1:14:31 PM)

Being able to communicate effectively in English is important to me, because it's the only language I speak.

I forgive errors. Shit happens. I make mistakes all the time. A lot of people more intelligent than I do as well.

But if you're not even trying, using single letters and numbers in place of words and ignoring all rules of grammar, it's a turn off. "But this isn't English class!" ...Those rules weren't just for school. You learned them for a reason.

Also, the writer in me cringes at too many errors in grammar and spelling. And I like my inner writer. So please don't offend her.

misanthropicdom -> RE: Does grammar matter to you? (11/25/2014 1:30:42 PM)

This kinda sums it up for me...

This boils down to personal preference.

For me, the attempt at good grammar is important. After all, you wouldn't show up at a first date looking like a slob.

As long as its comprehensible then it doesn't bother me. I would be more wary of grammar pedants than someone who has a problem with spelling or misses the odd apostrophe. Even when I try to read an incomprehensible post I don't presume the writer is being lazy. It could be a foreign person trying to make the effort or it could be someone with learning difficulties.

In the past I've had some flack on this site for my grammatical mistakes. It used to bother me [8|]. Dyslexics don't appreciate their intelligence being judged based on their spelling and grammar but unfortunately its something they often have to put up with.

I am not asking for perfection, just an effort.

I'm very admiring of your patience with people's writing, Maria - a patience that comes, no doubt, as a result of your own tribulations with dyslexia. There's a quiet kindness in you, and one that I see strongly in evidence every time you respond to our American friends here. [:)]
