FR It is sad to see so many people trying to use this unfortunate situation to push their own agendas. On the basis of information currently available, it would be reckless to associate this incident with Australia’s gun laws, our appalling asylum seeker laws and policies, or current Middle Eastern policies (reprehensible as they are). The picture emerging is that of one deranged individual, with a long and troubled history of violence and sexual predation, acting alone for motives that are yet to be identified accurately or reliably. Apart from the efforts at window dressing - which appear to be limited to putting a black flag with a common Muslim prayer written on it - there are few grounds for claiming that the incident is terrorism-related, though this may change as further information becomes available. If there is a terrorism related aspect to this incident, then it has surely backfired against the terrorists. Far from driving a wedge between Australian Muslims and the rest of us, Sydney’s population has reacted by embracing our Muslim brothers and sisters closer, re-asserting our multicultural identity and firmly rejecting the voices of hate and violence no matter where they may originate. The Islamic community has spoken with one voice to loudly and unequivocally denounce the perpetrator of this incident. From a terrorist POV this is surely the worst possible outcome. Being a Sydneysider, I am of course quite biased but I do believe that our reaction to this incident offers an example of how to respond to terrorist attacks that the world could do well to study and learn from. Rather than attacking and further marginalising minority groups and subcultures, we chose to stand by our Muslim community, to protect it against our own home-grown bigots and to unite and jointly stand against the forces of hate and bigotry. This thread might do well to focus on this aspect of the incident rather than repeating the same old tired clichés of confrontation or the same old tired sectarian agendas which have been shown over and over again to play into the terrorists’ hands.
