The number of women and girls at risk for female genital mutilation (FGM) in the United States has more than doubled in the past 10 years, according to new figures released on Friday.

The data, the first on FGM in the U.S. for a decade, is being published to coincide with the United Nations’ International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM.

More than half a million women and girls in the U.S. are at risk of undergoing FGM in the U.S. or abroad, or have already undergone the procedure, including 166,173 under the age of 18, according to the Population Reference Bureau (PRB). Immigration to the U.S. from African and Middle Eastern countries—where the practice of FGM is a deeply entrenched cultural tradition—is the sole factor for the rise in numbers, says Mark Mather, a demographer at PRB who led the data analysis. There has not been an increase in the practice happening in the U.S. itself, he says.

Really screwed up stuff. I will say that I am glad my parents' idea of a "special vacation" was taking us to Disneyland and Sea World.

This is a "diversity" that I just cannot get behind.

I'm confused by a sentence there...."half a million woman and girls in the U.S. are at risk of undergoing FGM in the U.S. or abroad"

Is this suggesting that these woman are here, citizens, and being taken out of the country to undergo this ghastly procedure ?

thishereboi -> RE: War on women (2/12/2015 6:30:46 PM)

According to the link, yes

"According to the PRB, California is the state with the largest number of at-risk women and girls, with 56,872, followed by New York, with 48,418, and Minnesota, with 44,293. In terms of cities in the U.S., New York, Washington and Minneapolis-St. Paul are the metropolitan areas with the largest numbers of at-risk women and girls. Hawaii is the only state with zero women and girls at risk, according to the data. However, Mather points that while there may be some at risk in the state, the number is so small that it didn’t show up in the sample data.

Included in the data are girls at risk of being sent back to their family’s origin country to undergo FGM—a practice widely known as “vacation cutting”—or having a traditional midwife or cutter sent to perform FGM in the U.S."

And I am with you Aylee, glad my parents preferred camping. That's fucked up.

Yes. Parents are taking the gals (their daughters) out of the US for FGM. They are also bringing over "midwives" to perform it on gals (their daughters).

slvemike4u -> RE: War on women (2/12/2015 6:36:40 PM)

That's disgusting, and no allowance for cultural diversity makes it any less so.

i found this helpful and complementary to the original article above.

KenDckey -> RE: War on women (2/14/2015 5:39:42 PM)

When I was 18 and stationed (Army) in Africa, I had a friend that was doing this to his daughter. His justification was that women were not put on earth to enjoy sex. That was for men only. I never understood this from then until now. The country that I was in finally in the mid 1990s outlawed the practice. To little to late as far as I am concerned.

MrRodgers -> RE: War on women (2/14/2015 8:46:49 PM)

At no time and in no place should humankind ever be...slave to culture. Time the whole world woke up to that.

hot4bondage -> RE: War on women (2/15/2015 7:18:24 AM)

That article seems to be pro-male genital mutilation. Barring extremely rare cases of medical necessity for minors, it's wrong to slice off anyone's body parts without their permission.

http://circumcisiondecisionmaker.com/circumcision-facts/

A few bullet points...

* About 117 boys die each year in the United States as a result of their circumcision, most from infections or blood loss.

* Most physicians do not have their sons circumcised.

* Circumcision regularly removes a shocking 3/4 of the penis’ sensitivity through the removal of the ridged band, foreskin “lips,” and most often the entire frenulum.

* Anesthesia is used in only 45% of circumcisions; the type of anesthetic varies. The most effective method does not eliminate all pain, and the most common type used, a topical creme, does almost nothing to reduce it. In fact, a major clinical test of the various types of anesthetics, on actual infants, was halted for humane reasons because of the intense pain.

* The average male will have more health problems from being circumcised than from being left alone.

* Circumcision has never been proven to be effective in either reducing or treating cervical cancer, penile cancer, urinary tract infections, or sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS.

ResidentSadist -> RE: War on women (2/15/2015 5:16:30 PM)

Genital mutilation isn't good for either sex, although the purpose of male circumcision isn't to make them non orgasmic. My dad was a doctor. I wasn't circumcised. Hell, he didn't even allow them to spank me. I got a massage from the nurse instead. He wanted my entrance into this world to be pleasant.
[:D]

I can't imagine being evicted from the comfort of your mother's womb, popping out into this bright world and suddenly getting your ass beat until the shock of it starts you breathing. Then on yoru first of second day here, they grab your dick and chop it. What a HORRIBLE first impression of this world that must make.

MercTech -> RE: War on women (2/15/2015 7:07:25 PM)

Back in the 1950s; the common take was that it was necessary for hygiene and would prevent prostate ailments in adult life. Yeah, if you didn't want your boy circumcised, you had a fight on your hands back then.

Lucylastic -> RE: War on women (2/15/2015 7:11:54 PM)

My boys were born late 80s early 90s and I had to explain my reasons.

DaddySatyr -> RE: War on women (2/15/2015 7:23:41 PM)

I was born in a Catholic hospital in 1964 and my mom said she had little issue.

When my eldest was born (1979), I was asked "Why not?" I said it was for religious reasons but was forced to sign a "release", absolving the hospital of guilt. By 1988 (My youngest), it didn't raise much of an eyebrow because people were learning that the "benefits" weren't quite so beneficial as was previously thought/shoved down peoples' throats.

It certainly can be a very different thing, it can also be exactly the same thing. It's also frequently much less invasive than male circumcision, where in a girl only receives a cerimonial nick to the hood and has nothing removed.
