What amazes me Michael is the perception of racism as opposed to reality. There is no blame to be had because of the progress of instant communication and the internet but it has changed how quickly perceptions are accepted. Now opinions are formed almost instantly and they are often wrong.

People just assume that what they read or hear is the truth without taking to the time find out the facts. When a tragedy like Ferguson… or a crime like Carolina and Baltimore happens the perception is all police are racists and so are all whites. … and whites think all blacks are thugs and looters. I hope we as humans learn how to deal with instant information and learn that perception is not always fact.

I'm going to assume, from the tenor of the preceding posts, that you guys don't believe in white privilege [8|]

A few of you even cited isolated incidents where your whiteness might have cost you a position or two.

I'm going to go off and try to consider the harm done to you guys by these isolated incidences.

I will try to remove all of the rest of the balance of your life from the picture while I consider the horror of one door being closed.

I really don't know how I will be able to reach the depth of your struggles in one short afternoon but I will try.

By the way, while I'm doing so I noticed not one of you deniers answered the hypothetical.....would you have been okay being born black in this country ?

Seriously though,do the rest of us a favor and continue to ignore that hypothetical. To answer it in the affirmative would just be an insult to the intelligence of the rest of us.....to answer it in the negative would give the lie to the rest of your position on this matter.

Have a great day the sun is shining here and I need to go hit some little WHITE balls [:D]

Whoa! Butch, I respect you and I know we disagree, often. I don't want to turn our civil disagreement into contention, but I have to take exception with: "… and whites think all blacks are thugs and looters". I don't grant that, at all. I am (mostly) white, unfortunately and I certainly don't think that all black people are looters (or any other form of criminal).

I'll go one step further: I think the government is trying to turn as many people as possible into criminals. It's the only excuse I can come up with for some of the insane laws that are enforced.

In fact, every black person I associate with on a regular basis has decried the riots as a bullshit excuse for thugs to just get free shit they wouldn't normally be able to steal (It's tough to shove that 40" TV into the front of one's pants, during normal business operations).

CreativeDominant -> RE: Why they riot (5/2/2015 10:43:08 AM)

Do I have privilege as a white male? From everything I've read...yes.

Should I feel guilty about that? No. I can't help the fact that I was born a white male into a society started by white males and therefore, naturally set up FOR them. None of us can change the color skin we are born with nor the gender were born with. So feeling guilty about something that is not chosen by us would be a waste of time.

Should I be aware that my status as a white, Christian male allows me to do certain things that others cannot? Yes, I should...

a. I can walk alone at night without fear of being raped. (A fear any sane woman has to carry)

b. I don't have to worry about being harassed because of my sexual orientation...straight. (How many gay men and women can say the same?)

C. I've never felt like the "token white person", nor made to feel that way, at any gathering I was invited to by a BLACK or brown friend.

O.k., so these are all things that my male white privilege extends to me. So...if I should not feel guilty, why should I be aware? So that I remember that some don't have that status. Their CHARACTER may be every bit as stellar as my own...hell, perhaps even better...and yet they can't do certain things I can, or fear doing certain things I can, or are subject to certain things that I am not BECAUSE they were not born the same color or gender. Those people, in possession of true quality of character and with the ability, should be helped and that takes awareness. But just not awareness of the reality but awareness that while some are held down simply because of their skin color or their gender or their sexual orientation, many are held down because of their own nature...Their lack of character, drive, ability, etc.. There is not, inside every single black man, the ability or the character or the intelligence to be president...anymore than there is in every woman, every gay, every non-Christian or, for that matter, every white man. Should everyone have the opportunity? Yes. Will all take advantage of the opportunity and WORK for it? No.

Awareness...so we make Opportunities...Yes.

Awareness...made to feel guilty...Granting unfair Advantage because of that guilt...No.

just a quick interjection---what you said reminded me of an experience I had a few years ago.

I had a phone interview for a position I would have loved to have gotten at a well reputed/academically select university. having a sense of that he could be forthright with me, the interviewer said, "if it were up to me, id hire you in a minute, but to be honest, you are the wrong color or gender."

I have considered on more than one occasion to change the name on my resume to azisi firooz, and sprinkle a few muslim or black references here and there, and see what kind of response I get.

quote:

ORIGINAL: BamaD

I actually had a black woman tell me that black people understand whites but whites do understand blacks. I told her that most of what black people say about whites is as far off as she was claiming whites were about blacks.
Maybe I shouldn't have told her that, she was my boss. She said they dealt with whites more, I pointed out that if you did something wrong 1000 times they were just real good at doing it wrong.

Bounty, Once (around 1983 or '84), when companies were allowed to ask about race on applications. The wording was: "What do you consider yourself to be?"

Since I believe the Garden of Eden was in Northern Africa, I checked off: "African American" on one form and "Caucasian" on another. The interviewer wanted to shit his pants (and could not hide the fact that he was shocked/disappointed) because of how I looked, walking in the door. He looked at me and shuffled through his papers and said: "I'm sorry but you don't look black to me." I told him he didn't sound black (If I closed my eyes, I would have sworn I was being interviewed by Humphrey Bogart) and could we get on with the interview.

P.S. I didn't get the job.

Bama, I will never forget the first person who said to me: "Of course you're a racist. Look at the color of your skin!" Oh, the irony!

I know the feeling.

Just an exaggeration to make a point of the influence of the media today... I know not every white thinks all blacks are thugs and not all blacks think all whites are racists... but there is a good portion that do exactly that and the media contributes to this.

Butch, the media is caught up in post modern thought/ liberal philosophy. Multi-culturalism and feminism are really just two examples. They purport to deconstruct the white male patriarchy and revise history to include all voices, which I have some sympathy for and don't believe history should just be written by the dominant winners.

But it's really gotten to an evil extreme. Racism is defined as a person with power being prejudice against a minority. So, by definition no minority is racist and their attitudes don't need to be part of the public discussion. Same for feminist misogyny. They also then define equal outcomes rather than equal opportunity as being "fair" regardless of personal responsibility or initiative.

So Bama, in the liberal philosophy, because your boss was a black female you would always have power and she wouldn't and therefore you would always be assume the racist misogynist in your relationship with her. In their minds, until twentfive govnors and fifty senators are female, with the appropriate mix of colors, we live in a racist, misogynist society and it's the white male patriarchies fault.

The corollary being that since it's the white male fault, he has privilege at the expense of everyone else and therefore cannot understand and needn't be included in the discussion. The whole white male privilege is an evil concept couched in deceptive terms that play emotionally in the press because all it really means is that we're now going to take our turn being exclusionary and define revisionist history our way and leave out the voice of the white male. i think I recall seeing mention of the phrase "white guilt" either here, or another thread recently.

I strongly suspect "white privilege" and "white guilt" are intimately related and their usage lies almost exclusively in liberal-dom.

HunterCA -> RE: Why they riot (5/2/2015 3:24:48 PM)

They are both pretty much a product of liberal post modern philosophy.

Lucy I believe talk is what is needed... real truthful talk... but someone saying i can't understand because i am not of their color will solve nothing. If this is a white on black problem then the facts of this discrimination need to come out... If there is blame then lets face it... but both sides must be willing to accept blame. Do you really think 200 plus black on black murders in St. Louis are ALL the FAULT of some kind of discrimination...Is it all the fault of Police that black on white crime in St. Louis is skyrocketing? There has to be reasons for all of this crap but it is dumb ass to talk about white shoes and black ones.

Butch

Saying you are not black so you can't understand is another way of saying that you can't disagree because anyone who disagrees is either ignorant or bigoted.

Whether there is racism and what to do about it is a completely separate question from why people riot.

I have known a number of racists, almost as many were black as were white.
Before we discuss racism that fact has to be acknowledged.

People steel and burn because they are thugs. Thugism has no race (just barely human) they still and burn because they like to steel and burn. They think they have the right to take anything they want because they are strong enough too. They follow the law of the jungle which in case some are unaware of this does nothing to advance anyone's rights.

Actually I think that the Thuggees were Asian. Indian, specifically.

Or,perhaps used to describe an actual real thing.

Whether or not you feel guilt over that is on you.

If I might use myself as an example....I am,and have been for years, aware of white privilege, this doesn't mean I walf around with white guilt.Far from it,that would be illogical I'm not responsible for my whiteness nor for societies granting me a privilege as a result of that whiteness.
I am aware of the privilege so that informs my opinions just like any other knowledge informs my opinions.

Some people walk around and try to deny the privilege because they feel guilty about it so therefore they must deny it .Whether or not you fall into that category is not for me to decide.
That's on you [:)]

One thing about lawyers, they come in contact and represent a great deal of different types of people. We learn about their lives, troubles, goals, challenges, etc.

Lawyers often have some of the best insights and often work on the front lines of important social issues. Most of Angelos clients are class action plaintiffs, and the bulk of those he represents are blue collar employees.

Bethlehem Steel used to be the largest employer in Baltimore. Now, its GONE. IF you drive in BALTO roads, you'd think the USA was a third world country.

We can only wonder in dumbfounded terms what the opportunity cost of endless wars in Afghanistan and IRAQ have cost us back home.

MNOT believes we should abandon globalization and go back to protectionism. Bernie Sanders is against the Asian Trade Deal (new Presidential nominee.)

Or 22 trillion dollars on the great society or 70 years of liberal mismanagement of Baltamore. Gees.

I was waiting for one like this. First there is the presumption that they are to go out an get a job and stop being addicted to welfare and/or other forms of assistance. But that creates another presumption. That the jobs are out there. They are not and that's issue in the Angelos quote.

Then there is the lack of enforcement of real estate laws against the slum lords so cities have created the 'new' ghetto, where businesses will not relocate. Then these poor are if they own, are dunned for real estate taxes that those same businesses don't pay as inducement to move to Balt, or wherever and do not hire from the 'new' ghetto.

The psychologists call this the psychology of despair where for 40 years, noting has changed in these neighborhoods no matter the assistance much of which goes to the working poor who are not part of the original argument for 'why they riot.'

Until govt. treats ALL areas and taxes and promotes ALL areas of a city, creating the same business environment as 'white' Balt., this problem will continue to exist with the same frustrations and the same results.

Here's an idea Hunter: Why don't you post about topics you actually know something about? Your conception of 'liberalism' bears no relationship to reality. Post-modernism is clearly a level or three above your pay grade.

If you wish to acquire some understanding of these and similar concepts, it would be helpful if you lose the bitterness, the passive 'victim' posture and the grotesque caricatures of progressive thought systems that permeate your pontifications on these topics. Your posts are little more than bitter quasi-racist rants about something you don't understand - the classic uninformed 'victim' trailer trash stance. Its becoming embarrassing to endure your version of your own victimology

Shipping jobs overseas, a depressed minimum wage, troubled schools, and the drug war haven't helped.

The NYT had a stunning article about how 1.5 Million Black men are simply missing.

Whites ages 25-54: 100 women and 99 men

Blacks ages 25-54: 100 women and 87 men

I watched the fight last night and it came out that Mayweather's father was put in prison for five years. Death and Prison have essentially disappeared 1.5M black men. Jaw dropping.
