I can ban. Again, though, the topics that have been raised have been responded to by some, so they have actually made the forums a more interesting and active place to be. That is where we walk the line.
Sure, the poster in question is a weirdo, but hey, aren't we all in some way? And we've all seen barely-literate posters come and go.
Banning via IP only works so well, when it changes each time people get online, or even few days/weeks/etc. We use the tools we can, and we are working to make this as lightly moderated as possible with the tools and technology we have.
I understand that there is bad history. I've been there. I've seen it. Not all of it, but enough. And I've heard about it from others, long-standing members.
In my defense, I am the one who has allowed everyone back in, when they've approached me.

It took a degree of Chutzpah to jump into this snake pit of a thread I had set up (hey, I was a little ticked off). You got sniped at a bit when you landed, but your riposte was clever, non-defensive and not self centered. You focused on our questions, answered concisely and invited us to choose a path between optimism or pessimism. You asked us to cut you and your team some slack by assuming the best rather than the worst. Inviting positive choices is good leadership skills and good crowd control.
You took some of the edge off my insulting "ass" thread with humor and used the term itself, telling us if we chose to be an ass with conspiracy theories, it was OK because you are an adult with real fabric underwear... and then provided a pic as proof. Indeed you do look patient and comfortable in your adult-real-fabric-underwear. Thanks for playing. Your sense of humor is well received. I like your style and you got social skills.
I must say that I have found you to be informative, unpretentious, concise in your communications, transparent about who you are and what you can or want to do around here. You have kept your word, doing what you said you would do and not spun us on any of our questions. You have gone from the potentially evil admin covering for 1 or 2 of the only other people that work here to having our gratitude for lifting bans, fixing tags and sharing information, even uncomfortable information like the blank log.
From what I can perceive of your personality, I get the distinct impression you're gonna keep those comfy adult-real-fabric-boxers on and stay level headed, instead of donning a speedo, transforming into a drama queen and randomly jumping out of the bushes at members with a ban stick while throwing fellow teammates under the same bus you happen to be driving... like some of your predecessors.
Speaking of predecessors and drama, I see you have no desire to wallow in the drama of the former mods or what they did. You ask for a clean slate, a fresh start and faith that you will do your best. I think that is a great plan. This is a really great website when it is in balance. Leaving the past behind to focus on the future will create a much nicer ambiance around here. You have my support and I will change the tone of my comments to be in accord with your desire for us to cut you some slack and leave the past behind.
You took the job and committed to the work ahead which makes you our host as it is your responsibility now. Even though it isn't my domain, I would like to give you a warm welcome to these forums since you are new to us. Glad to have you here. I think your trial by fire has turned out rather well so far.
