OK. I'm kind of the Queen of Quotes, so I hope you'll be cool with me doing this in a way that I don't miss any of your points. Fair? quote:
ORIGINAL: M38284 @LadyPact Focusing in on what I (and those who have worked hard on bringing this place back) are NOT getting done is a very sad way to look at the improvements that have been being made. However, I'll address your points. > What happens the next time you take three days off and kiddie porn crosses the site? Will that be ok until you come back on Monday? Yes. It will have to be. I will not be moderating 24/7, and we do not yet have the team in place to do it. And it would have been the same when I was not here at all. I'm not trying to suggest that you, as a human being, try to be here 24/7. Nobody can keep up with that and you and I both know what happened to the last couple of people that tried. Some jobs are too big for any one person to handle on their own. Then, there's that nice other thing about, you know, having a life and all. quote:
Small steps toward improvement. We focus on what can be done. > Don't leave this place unattended. Seriously, I've seen stuff on this site that made my skin crawl. Thank you for the suggestion, but staffing this 24/7 is just not feasible at this time. No offense, but I don't think we agree on this. I'm not even going on the 24/7 thing being optimal. (It would be nice but it's kind of a pipe dream.) You have posters here who, in my opinion, would be exceptionally qualified to help you. They know ToS, know computer systems, and at least have a starting off point about forum rules. Yes, I understand those will be subject to change, but even if you were to say 'we're not doing X the way it used to be done,' it wouldn't be that hard for them to pick up whatever is new and improved. quote:
Be grateful or not. I'd say be grateful. We've brought you and a lot of wonderful people back. It's getting better, even if not on your preferred schedule or mine. :) > Make some damn policy. You've sat on it long enough about folks threatening to out people around here. How can you have a higher priority than that? And it's being taken care of. As far as policy, there is no "sitting." There is a lot of work to be done, and the policy is one priority among many, and a complex one at that. I'm not trying to hang you out to dry or tell you that I don't appreciate any efforts that you are making. In fairness, you can't blame me for not seeing what you might be doing behind the scenes compared to what I see on the screen. I can only imagine the chaos you've walked into and I'm the first person to tell you that I wouldn't want to be in your shoes. quote:
It is a high priority, but not higher than dealing with the reports we get every single day on the forums and the other side on serious issue, like the above mentioned children, and more. The little people thing? The only thing I can say is that I hope with all sincerity that you have a very strong stomach. I don't think that part is easy on anyone. quote:
> Get some damn staff. Nobody expects you to hold watch all of the time. Get some assistants. Folks who know the joint. It's not like you don't have a resource pool. Apparently you expect me to hold watch all the time. Or you want to pay for the extra help? Or create the policies that everyone (including anyone who might have done this before, following a COMPLETELY different set of rules) will have to follow? Or make sure that those people are actually following those rules and policies, and NOT banning people like yourself? No, I really don't expect you to hold watch all of the time. That's why I think it's worth considering for you to have some help. Even if it's just a couple of people who will help you with picture reviews or the mess that comes through from the profile side. If E is finally paying people around here to do the work, I'm not going to kid you and say I don't think that's awesome, because I do. It's only fair that people get compensated for their time and for an honest day's work. quote:
That's a very quiet and simple thing to do, you know...banning someone who mouths off. Are you really suggesting we go back to that, just to get moderators? I am not willing to take that risk. It's not an all or nothing proposition. There is a middle ground. I don't think I'm the only person with the opinion that the last PIC (person in charge) did a great job. I'm still of the opinion that you don't give the keys to the shop to a person who publicly admitted for years that she had blackouts, lapses in memory, and a few other tidbits that anybody can find using the search feature. I'm not looking to nail anybody to the cross for being sick. I'm not the type to kick somebody when they are down if they have cancer, either. It's a hard thing to accept things that happen when people are ill... Maybe even because they are ill. I think decent people try to do the best they can on that subject. People have been saying that E is sick, too, and maybe that's why he's made some of the bad decisions that he's done. I don't know. I've never met the man. If he is as... Ummm, doing as badly as people say, I'd be putting the POA into the attorney's hands pretty darn quick. quote:
> While you're pissing around creating new smilies, you might want to think about some other stuff. Ah. I see. You apparently think that anyone who works at CS should be focusing it 24/7 on nothing but doing what YOU think is the priority. Don't you think there are priorities? Hey, new smilies are really cute and all and I even think folks (myself included) had some fun playing with them. Give me a little credit, ok? I'm not a complete asshole. Do I think some things have higher priorities than others? Yes. Fixing the ticket system before the smilies, I was with you 100% because I do think one thing is more important than the other. A person running around necroing every thread they can find through the search feature is annoying but it doesn't come close to people threatening to out each other or somebody trying to contact the authorities because they can't tell that something on the forums is a d^mn joke. (Yes, you did fix those things. I'm only using them as examples because I really don't enjoy talking about *bad* ToS violations.) quote:
Let me explain something from my POV, and I'm saying this as a single human, not as a representative of this site: No matter how fucked up a project (I've spent a lot of my life reclaiming projects), there HAS to be downtime. And for coders/programmers/project managers, doing small things that make people happy, like Easter eggs and new smilies, that is their downtime before diving back into the brain-draining, soul-debilitating work. Off my soapbox. Again, that is me saying that. not Collarspace or Collarchat as an entity. In all sincerity, you don't have to explain to me that every word from you is reflective of the site. I am aware that you have personal opinions of your own. Unless you are E behind the Mod name, I'm willing to lay odds that sooner or later, there's going to be something you don't agree with, either. quote:
At this point, I'm VERY happy with the fact that the site and forums are running relatively smoothly. And, for the record, I will continue to live my life as I need to and take breaks as needed as well, because I believe (as someone else said) a good work/life balance in moderating these forums will be more of a help than a hinderance. That's why I keep suggesting that you get folks to help you. I think just about every forum member has seen stuff cross the screen that they really do wish they could un-see. (I'm not just talking about the thousands of dick pics, either.) There really are some evil, foul people in the world and I hate to think you're going to have to be the one subjected to all of it. I really am trying to wish you the best, even if you don't see it that way.
