It is always a good thing when someone can sum up solipsism in a single sentence.

Considering how many of the comments of the 35 page thread on the other site is "how will people interested in kink be able to find it" and "I wouldn't have found kink if it wasn't for Fet" testimonials, yeah, I'm thinking it's worth discussing.

I think that when it was first created, it was so small it didn't need a search feature, and then later when membership took off, they didn't know how to implement a search feature properly... and so the fiction that it was never intended as a dating site was born.

And it is certainly a fiction! Any social network, any community, NEEDS an effective way for people to find their peers, in order to FORM a community. And anytime you get a community of like minded people coming together, people will make romantic connections... ESPECIALLY when the mutual interest is sexual.

Interestingly... back then in 2008, FWF 2.0 was invitation only... which apparently didn't work. So much for learning from one's mistakes.

I'll have to do some digging. All I know on the subject was one of the ways that Fet drew female members to the site in the first place was a promise that A/S/L features would never be a part of it.

Finding peers is what I tend to think the "Events" tab is for, if we're discussing a community in a real life sense. Almost all sites that draw people into them because they have common interests will have people finding each other in a romantic sense. People have "found" each other through things like WoW forums and The Walking Dead fan sites, too.

I'm sure he does... or fails to remember history. I found other wayback machine Fetlife pages that show they once used captcha... so it's not like they are clueless about methods of weeding out bots... which further suggests to me that the crisis is manufactured.

And as you may have seen... they tried to make it invitation only back then... I wonder why it didn't work, and why they think it will now.

I believe Fetlife was just a rebranding of FWF... not a different site.

That was my understanding, too. I still haven''t found the statement from JB that I was looking for earlier. (Lack of thread search on the other site.) I only found a third party recount from the statement on the vote page from about four years ago.

Of course, that's the same thread where so many people said, "don't do this," so the thread regarding the vote may be biased.

Hmmm... interesting. The announcement tries to suggest that it was always the plan to have text verification. Of course, that begs the question of why they wouldn't have mentioned it in the first place. It smacks of a panicked response to the overwhelmingly negative feedback to the "invitation only" idea.

On the bright side, I guess it indicates they are listening somewhat, even if their PR and marketing is horrific. On the other hand, it kind of indicates a continued dedication to kluged and cobbled together "improvements".

Status: offline 		I've had my own theories about what I think is going on with the higher ups at Fetlife, and I've read many more theories besides... but I also realized that we have an innate desire to find patterns and logic in everything... so when someone behaves in an irrational fashion that seems to make no practical sense, it's natural to try and impose logic on their behavior, and imagine that there is some genius and nefarious hidden plan in the works... but that is not always the case. Some people are just fuck-ups.

Is there any such thing as an anonymous text message? I learned from my first days on collarme something I hadn't known before, that a person can run a Google search on your phone number. A guy I'd been messaging with a little on the profile side did that when I gave him my phone number, and Google gave him my full name, address, and profession. I learned from that never to give my phone number on these sites. So if I were looking to join Fet now, I'd never sign up.
