ORIGINAL: Mezentius unfortunate facts... in the US: 1 out of every 10 women will be forced to have sex before the age of 21... of those women, 3 out of ten will be killed by the rapist... Hang on, hang on...rewind. Can you run that by me again, please? My Spurious Statistics Detector just went off, and I'd like to check whether it's a genuine alert or maybe the battery's running down. You just said that 1 in 10...i.e. 10% of the United States female population are raped before the age of 21 and that 3 in 10, i.e. 30% of those...i.e. 3% of the entire US female population are killed by a rapist before the age of 21. That is a MAJOR cause of premature mortality. Should I be checking the official stats on this to see if it's really true....or might there have been some sort of mistake in the original assertion. pedantically Laura P.S. Okay, I see everyone else is onto the maths already. If I'm sad enough I'll go check the figures for myself some time and be amazed. I don't have the UK missing persons figures to hand right now but I do recall being astounded by those....a lot of people each year, every day seem to choose to vanish (or, are they 'disappeared'?) Rape statistics - Rape is called "the most underreported violent crime in America." In a large national survey of American women, only 16% of the rapes (approximately one out of every six) had ever been reported to the police.
Rape in America: A Report to the Nation, National Victim Center, 1992 - In a study conducted by the Department of Justice and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers interviewed 8,000 women and 8,000 men. Using a definition of rape that includes forced vaginal, oral, and anal intercourse, the survey found that 1 in 6 women had experienced an attempted rape or a completed rape.
At the time they were raped: 22% were under the age of twelve 54% were under the age of eighteen 83% were under the age of twenty-five
Prevalence, Incidence, and Consequences of Violence Against Women, Department of Justice, 1998 - [size=2 align="right"]In the Rape in America study, 60% of the women who reported being raped were under 18 years old:
29.3% were less than 11 years old 32.3% were between 11 and 17 22.2% were between 18 and 24 7.1% were between 25 and 29 6.1% were older than 29 3.0% age was not availableRape in America: A Report to the Nation, National Victim Center, 1992 Yes it is striking, and this does not include girls who were molested as children, which would make it 4 out of 10 being sexually abused in one's life time.
