Status: offline 		That was a much smaller contract than all the advance reports were warning us about.  I mean, I'm sure he's not complaining, but why would he leave the Dolphins for $4 million a year?  There must be more to the story.  I think deep down he was convinced he wasn't cut out to coach in the NFL.

Status: offline 		I think that contract will make him the highest paid college coach. 
It's much easier to have success at the collegiate level.  I'm also guessing that the job stress is signficantly less.  You have more #1 draft picks (recruits) and it's easier to field a good team.  And I wonder, like you, if he feels he can't get the Dolphins to where he'd like them to be.

Status: offline 		 I bet Charlie Weiss is kicking himelf in the butt about now. An HC opening in Miami and potential opening in Pitt. Both of whom would fit perfectly for him, from a defensive standpoint. He is hogtied on recruiting issues at ND, where as Saban will have more wiggle room. Weiss really wanted a HC job and I bet if he had a magic mirror he would have rode things out for these two openings.

Status: offline 		Cowher has until next week to decide.  Ownership is giving him some time to think about it.  They need to know, Whisenhunt is on the interview circuit and he should be Cowher's successor (if they hire from within).

Status: offline 		I think Weis is satisfied; in fact, I'd be surprised if people haven't been feeling him out about other jobs.  The real issue with Weis is that I ain't convinced yet that he's going to win in the long run.  Let's not forget that he's played these past two years with Willingham's players.  And where's the defense?  ND is getting clobbered in the Sugar Bowl right now by an LSU team that is clearly more talented, especially on defense.

This is what's wrong with the college-coaching carousel: schools don't give coaches enough time to prove their worth on the recruiting circuit.  They fire them before they have a chance to get their own players, and by the same token they anoint the successful coaches before they have to win with their own players.  For all we know, Willingham was a better recruiter than Charlie Weis.  It'll take at least another year before you can have much of a read on that one.

I  had heard < back when Weiss was leaving NE > that his ND contract pretty much tied him up and kept him out of any NFL or college coaching job until something like 2015. I know in the NFL coaches break their contracts all the time, ala Saban, but does the same hold true for college ball?

I agree that Weiss may not be all they expected in the long run, but I also believe that ND has a pretty tough academic requirement that prohibits the " wiggle room" other college coaches have when it comes to recruiting.

Speaking of Weiss's ND, how about poor Brady Quinn ? He is probably going to go to the Raiders. I cannot imagine he will be happy about that one.
Was it Eli or Peyton Manning who just flat out refused to go where they were drafted first? I may be wrong and it's not either of the Mannings, but one of the current NFL QB's " just said no"

He can get out of his contract any time he wants if he's willing to forgo the money.  Supposedly there's a $15 million buyout, but who really knows?  Anyway, it's hard to feel sorry for these guys.

That was Eli, and he might be kicking himself now, because he's not cut out to play in New York and the Chargers are probably the best team in football.  (The Giants are certainly kicking themselves.)

People forget that John Elway did the same thing to the Colts years ago.

The Patriots are good but waning. The Jets are good and waxing. In the NFL its impossible with the salary cap to keep all the personal after winning as the Patriots have done. Belichick isn't given enough credit for replacing the people who leave with the right free agent or trade. He also has good assistant coaches who make sure regardless who is on the roster, that the Patriot "system" is still maintained. It should be a good and interesting game.

Chad Pennington always seems to be throwing against the wind. Comparing him to a baseball pitcher, he is a "junk ball" pitcher versus a "hard thrower". You can win with both methods.

Status: offline 		Well, yes, he's always had arm-strength problems, but the real problem is that he's so damned inconsistent.  He forces a lot of passes and just doesn't have the arm for it.  So he ends up with too many interceptions, and the team isn't good enough to overcome that.  When he just takes what the defense gives and marches the team methodically, they do surprisingly well.

The Jets aren't toast, but they can't be favored, either.  I told mbmbn I think the Pats have a 70% chance of winning.

Status: offline 		I hope they give that job to Whisenhunt or Grimm.  I think Whisenhunt is probably the primary candidate.
How long before Cowher is coaching the Carolina Panthers?
I think to "officially" retire he has to sit out one season, otherwise another team has to pay the remaining contract to the Steelers.

Status: offline 		Trying to be completely unbiased < impossible, of course> I think the Jets/Pats match up is the perfect matchup for the first playoff game.  A few key players were absent due to injuries when the Jets beat the Pats in the reg. season and are back up and running for this upcoming game. While LAM believes that the Jets edge out the Pats in the coaching dept, I believe they are neck and neck. Pennington does have a weak arm when compared to Brady or a Big Ben type player, but the Jets defense is nothing to be taken lightly. And my philosophy is Defense wins championships. And IMO Pennigton is the comeback player of the year, not Brees. Pennington " came back" after an injury, not a lousy season with another team. Big difference. The man has my respect for having the testicular fortitude to overcome  something physical vs something non tangible. I have nothing but repect for the Jets and look forward to a hard fought win.

Status: offline 		Drew Brees had a shoulder injury too.  Isn't that what Chad Pennington had?  I don't know whose injury was worse.
