There would be more to what you're saying if your stated options had been (1) "God necessarily exists," (2) "God may exist," and (3) "God necessarily does not exist."  But those weren't the options you gave.  "God exists" and "God does not exist" are in the present tense; therefore they are either true or false statements at this moment (i.e. they have one and only one truth value).  Sure, God might exist in the future, or might have existed in the past, but he either does or does not exist at this moment.

Edited to add: And sissify, come on.  "Science" isn't harming anything; "science" is merely knowledge.  It has no agency.  PEOPLE are harming the world, and going back to a time when we didn't know as much as we know now is not the solution--because it's impossible.

In my previous arugment, the notion of "God" is by no means a philosophical constant. As such, there must be at least the assumption that "God" - or whatever superstition you wish to use in its place - could at one time have existed and no longer exists or may not yet exist and may one day come into existance or it could come in and out of existence at regular or irregular intervals (what does one take for cosmic levels of irregularity?). In any case, the notion that "god" may exist suggests that under the right circumstances the "god" could become existant. However, the notion that "god may exist under the right circumstance requires evidence of what those circumstance must be and that "god" does indeed exist at that specific interval. There is no evidence for either of these requirements and as such, the statement is currently false.

Every so often I'd get guy in the bar that would get mad when a girl turned him down for a dance. And once in a great while they'd either spit or throw their drink on her. Well... if she was tough enough to be in there in the first place, that usually meant she was either going to punch back or scratch and claw. .......hmmm, to quote someone or other 'any sufficiently advanced technology is indistiguishable from magic'......having said that (and before sissify thinks i'm agreeing with him) i am far from convinced that astrology has any objective reality. However until enough research is done on the placebo effect and it's potential ramifications i shan't totally write it off. Oh, and i totally agree with LAM about science merely being a body of information......what is done with it can be either good or bad.....and sometimes both.

Sissify, the problem with your debating style is that it is polemic......were you to make a small space in your mind that held the possibility (not the certainty) of you being wrong or misinformed about some parts of your belief system it'd be a lot easier to agree with you on those areas where agreement is possible.

It has been this slave’s experience that no-one is AN _______( insert astrological sign of choice), 100%.  The position of this slave’s sun and ascendant are both smack-dab in Scorpio, yet this slave is not going to resemble that description for every aspect or nuance of her existence~rather a combination of ALL of the aspects of this slave’s chart, and how they interact together.

quote:

…just for clarification, I have had my chart done 3 times (my ex-wife was into it), each time I did resemble what was in the chart in many ways, but here is the real kicker......none of the three charts in any way resembled eachother, they all contradicted eachother, and I conformed with different aspects of each one...orig: Arpig

Similarly, there have been times when this slave has been to several different modern medical professionals, presented with the same history and set of symptoms and been given several differing diagnoses.  Mom always said that’s why they call it a “practice”, however, this slave hasn’t given up faith that occasionally they do get some stuff right, even if it is bits and pieces from each one that give this slave, or the next professed medical expert, a better picture of the whole situation.

quote:

…Why are those Astrological readings always good and flattering?...orig:popeye1250

It has been this slave’s experience that you tend to get that when you are “paying” a price for the "service" of a "reading", aka: being flattered.

quote:

When you use it properly, it leads to introspection and questioning your subconcious...orig:Lorelei115

This slave would second that wholeheartedly, and also report that in this slave’s experience, by and for oneself is the preferred if not intended way for it to be as useful as it can, if at all, as a guide to further introspection and MOST helpful when NOT involving third parties to interpret for you and (egads) NEVER for money.  Ditto on the tarot card thing.

it can be something entertaining you read in the paper after checking out whatever stats you are keeping track of, just like a trip to the psychologist can offer you fun little mental exercises to do.  If you had faith in either one, they might be able to help you improve your quality of life through a better understanding of yourself.

No I did not put this in the wrong place, it is not a poll, and I am not asking people to list their astrological signs. These are serious questions.

Logically I can find no reason to believe in astrology, it is seemingly impossible that where the stars were when you were born would have an impact on your character and the flow of events in your life, but it seems that many people I know are very much outwardly like their sun signs, and the people I know that had their complete charts done were even more like their complete chart in a deeper way. It is kinda weird, has no scientific explanation to me.

Now I know that there are enough traits under each sign to give people some of each, and that we can all be stubborn, quick witted, a worrier, or some other random trait, but not all of us have a strong propensity to certain traits.

The reason for this thread is, how much do you feel you mirror your sun sign and ascendent sign (the two most important). Do you know what these signs are, have you had your chart done? If you have a partner do they resemble their sign or chart strongly, how about your unmentionables... do you have a chart for them, do they share the characteristics of their chart?

I don't know shit about this crap...I'm DEFINITELY a Leo, and it is total horsehit.

(But I'm definitely a Leo).

(Did I just entirely step in my own shit here?)

(I think that may have come across a tad harsh...)

I'm 1 of those "cusp" kids, lol...Scorp/Sag, so western astro isn't really my thing, but according to my western astro, my sun is Sag, Leo moon & my ascendant (1st house) is Cancer, and yes...I do know what these signs r, lol
I did my own chart many yrs.ago & also had a friend 2 do mine  for comparison, but  I must say that I prefer eastern astro, not just because I use 2 study it,lol...but it seems 2 be more accurate as far as my characteristic traits r concerned, my eastern is Dragon w/ wood + element(<--- that's a positive sign...not a plus sign, lol) born in the hr of the Snake, confusing huh,lol... I also did a chart for my son ( a Pisces) whose eastern is alot more accurate than his western...

I am also a cusp girl, too...between Pisces and Aquarius.  I also have a Leo moon and ascendant.  I also find that according to western astrology, I get along with those who are the fire signs rather than those related to my "water" sign.  Do you find that happens to you, too?

Do not dismiss so easily whether the sun revolves around the earth, or the earth around the sun.  Even in high school physics it is made quite clear that they revolve around each other.  Relativity plays a role.

Technically, high school physics teaches that two bodies rotate around their center of mass, not around each other.  The reason it appears that the Earth revolves around the sun is because of the differences in the mass of the two celestial bodies.  Then you have to throw in the other masses orbitting the sun.

It is technical, duh.

Of course, on a grander scale, all that rotation is swirling around the galactic center of mass of the Milky Way galaxy, which is likely revolving...

sissifytoserve is correct, nobody ever died before science came along and
started killing people.

U would hafta ask me that,lol...lemme see here, Fire vs Water...for me it's a kinda weird thing, 4 example...I tend 2 get along w/Cancer fem's/males w/no problem, I get along w/Scorp fem's & very few Scorp males, Pisces fem's same thing we get along just fine, but when it comes 2 Pisces males, it just ain't happenin,lol...I dunno if my personality is 2 strong 4 them cuz they (some of them) tend 2 be very sensitive or what, now my son is a Pisces & we get along very well...
As far as the fire signs, I clique w/other Sag's (fem/male) usually w/no problem, Aries fem, I don't really seem 2 run into,(worked w/a few...that was interesting, lol)  the males I avoid dating,lol...but can hang out w/from time 2 time,lol...Leo males, I've only met 1 that I liked, the feeling was mutual but we lived in different states...(oh well, lol) I don't run into 2 many Leo fem's, now the woman who raised me is a Leo & we get along like oil/water,lol...here's something that I find 2 be very interesting, in eastern astro it sez that ur affinities come in 4's & ur conflicts (nemesis) come in 6's, which in my case would be those who were born in the yr of the Dog, I have gotten along w/Dog fem's but I have yet 2 get along w/a Dog male.

Wish I could remember Douglas Adams explanation for astrology, something along the lines of 'How can somebody believe that of all the countless trillions of planets there are, a random selection of a couple of them will somehow effect the life of one of the few carbon based creatures on just one of those countless trillions of planets.'

I mean, someone long ago decided the view of some stars from where he was standing looked ever so slightly like a ram, therefore everyone born in June will be grumpy in the morning!  It really is as silly as that.  Someone can call themselves an 'expert' in astrology and tell all the people in the world born in November that at some point within the next two weeks there may be romance on the horizon!  Chances are at least one of those people may meet someone they quite like!  Each to their own of course and if believing in such random nonsense makes you happy then im pleased for you, as for me, I think it's all a load of shite!
