Well, most of the things that drive me crazy have been mentioned already: slashes and capitalizations in pronouns, speaking in the third person, presumptions that subs will submit to anyone, misuse of the word "dominate," and rhetotic used to convey the idea that there is "true" submission or domination. But here are a few that have yet to be discussed:
1. Misuse of the word "collared." When I see something like "I've been a collard sub for 5 years," I always picture a really moldy sandwich stuffed with limp, leafy vegetables.
2. Punctuation strings. When I see strings of punctuation marks, I get so mad!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know why ......... maybe I'm too picky, but ........... Doesn't anyone know that less can be more????????????
3. All caps. STOP SCREAMING is my first response. My second response is to either hit the delete button or the back button to leave the message thread.
4. Text-message short-hand and/or leet speak. While I can understand y u abbrevi8 on the phone, please spare me when you have a keyboard in front of you.
5. Massive overuse of colors, styles and/or font sizes in postings. That can be very hard on the eyes. Sure, I can understand the desire to personalize the text, but once should really be enough.
6. More than one quote in a signature line and/or animation in a signature line. This is particularly annoying when reading threads where two people are in a debate or conversation and have posted many messages on a single page. Most of the page is then taken up with the same quotes, over and over again.
7. The "this isn't class" complaint. First, I doubt anyone would actually bring up these problems in thread about another topic, but this one is about communication problems. Second, believe it or not, bad grammar does result in bad communication. Such flaws make it hard to read and to communicate. Consider the following paragraph:
This collard sub doesn't agree with Y/you, your an idiot and i have to tell Sir cause He's so domin8 and doesn't like anyone to bother his little wee treasure muffin ........ this wee treasure muffin is sure that W/we aren't alone in feeling upset!!!!!!!! And Y/you really SHOULD NOT BUG ME ABOUT GRAMMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS NOT english class. Don't u know that?????????
Even if you can manage to ignore the illogical defensiveness in that paragraph, was it any fun to read? Would you even bother replying to such a post? When I read such things, all I want to say is, "For the love of God, people, make it easier on your readers! Have that much consideration, please."
But the thread isn't about language, so I write nothing at all and start worrying about the future of humanity.
