I know some people will dance for joy at the idea of this individual dying, but from what I hear this only means more bloodshed in Iraq, and for that I am deeply saddened. It was unnecessary to execute him, and will most likely only martyr him.

It just does not make me joyful, but then I am not the type to get joy from such things.

I've been watching the news for 4 hours and was watching when the first hint that his execution had been carried out came through. Good riddence.

I've the oddest feeling about this news. Almost a let-down of sorts and I have no idea why I feel this way.

Articles:

Saddam Hussein hanged, says Al Hurra TV station

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S.-backed Iraqi television station Al Hurra said Saddam Hussein had been executed by hanging shortly before 6 a.m. (0300 GMT) on Saturday.

Reports: Saddam Executed in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Some Arab media, including Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya and the U.S.-financed Al-Hurra, reported about an hour before daylight Saturday (about 10 p.m. EST Friday) that Saddam had been executed. State-run Iraqiya television cited reports of Saddam's hanging, but like the other television stations did not provide sources.

There was no confirmation from the Iraqi government.

A U.S. judge on Friday refused to stop Saddam's execution, rejecting a last-minute court challenge.

Some background:

Official: Saddam to Be Executed Tonight

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - The official witnesses to Saddam Hussein's impending execution gathered Friday in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone in final preparation for his hanging, as state television broadcast footage of his regime's atrocities.

With U.S. forces on high alert for a surge in violence, the Iraqi government readied all the necessary documents, including a "red card" - an execution order introduced during Saddam's dictatorship. As the hour of his death approached, Saddam received two of his half brothers in his cell on Thursday and was said to have given them his personal belongings and a copy of his will.

...

"Saddam will be handed over shortly before the execution," the official said. The physical transfer of Saddam from U.S. to Iraqi authorities was believed to be one of the last steps before he was to be hanged. Saddam has been in U.S. custody since he was captured in December 2003.

Al-Nueimi said U.S. authorities were maintaining physical custody of Saddam to prevent him from being humiliated before his execution. He said the Americans also want to prevent the mutilation of his corpse, as has happened to other deposed Iraqi leaders.

"The Americans want him to be hanged respectfully," al-Nueimi said. If Saddam is humiliated publicly or his corpse ill-treated "that could cause an uprising and the Americans would be blamed," he said.

As joyous as this may be, Master reminds me to state, we all need to stop and say an extra prayer for our men and women on the ground in a country that may erupt like a volcano because of this moment in history....

I heard on NPR that it was believed that the execution would be immient. I did not know until I read this thread that it had happened.
I see no reason for celebration.
An act of violence against a man who committed acts of violence does not impress, thrill, placate, excite or appease me.
It is a sad, sad commentary.
I do not believe that anything was accomplished by this execution.
If he had been foreced to spend the rest of his life serving the cause of those he oppressed, perhaps they would have felt some degree of vindication and this human being would have been offered a potential path to redemption.
Instead, we enact violence as payment for violence.
I just dont get it.

I only hope that Saddams prediction does not come true and he does not become the martyr he desired to be.

If I was judge and jury, that's the sentence I would have handed down.

They'll get the same prayer they get every other day in that constantly erupting volcano.

A very bad man has recieved justice and I just might stay up until I find a pic of his body before I get a good night's sleep.  I know a few guys who were over there who'd like to have it in their e-mail.

Yes, he was a very bad man.
But really, do you honestly believe "our guys" are over there for a reason that has anything at all to do with his crimes against humanity?

I have many conflicting thoughts about this execution. while generally against capitol punishment, Saddam was a poster child for it. However inevitable it was The job was botched from the beginning. the US had him executed and hiding behind the present regeime will not change that, the people of Iraq are not stupid nor blind. The fear of retaliation is very justified., and civil war immenant., I hope I am wrong. This could have all been avoided had the US convened an International Islamic Court, with  the head Mullahs from every Islamic country sitting as judges and having Saddam tried according to Islamic law, then Islam itself  would have convicted Saddam not any regieme or political entity. And when convicted there would be no chance of myrterdom, hewould bee seen  for what he was a criminal deserving of only contempt. If the verdict were death then so be it

Amen Julia. There will be no toast or clinging of glasses tonight in my house because of his death. And while like you, I don't want to see any more of our soldiers or Marines killed, I do however hope that the insurgents up the ante so much that it eventually demagogues these neocons so badly that none of them will be able to make any public appearances after they get out of office because they'll shouted down and have bottles and eggs tossed at them.

Well there are some people where Saddam killed up to a dozen family members. I don't think anyone can even attempt to relate to that kind of a loss. We arnt talking about simply murder or even a serial killer here. Saddam was a genocidal madman. He is in the same class of guys like Hitler, Pol Pot, or Mussalini who all had slaughtered mass numbers of their own people. So we are dealing with a completely different type of criminal. And there is absolutely no question to his guilt.

In the long-run, you are right, it doesn't accomplish much. And terrorists and Saddam's supporters will most likely try to seek revenge in the coming days. But this was a guy that was a symbol of that genicidal regime. And technically it isn't our decision of what to do with him. The Iraqi people had the right to do with him as they please. They are the ones that suffered under his regime, and they are the ones with the biggest stake in this entire matter. And they decided they wanted to execute him.
