OK this may be totally biased and narrow minded but its an opinion. Living in the Czech Republic I can say that the best things to offer are cheap beer, a relatively decent public transportation system, and excessively rude people. A top Czech politician ( I believe it was the Czech Minister of Foreign Policy) said it best. This is a relatively true paraphrase "The Czech people need America moe than America needs us." Now if the EU can just stop relying on the US to handle its defence then the world can focus on more pressing problems like world hunger, global warming and getting Bush out of office!!! In other words take care of your own backyard instead of complaining about your neighbors'.

No. If you read the opening post I was suggesting the EU should get its own defence policy rather than have US or any other nations troops onits territory causing tension. That was taken by some as being anti-American and things get bad tempered from there.

I still don't see why Europe shouldn't get its own defence force but that means those Europeans believing in that policy persuading other Europeans that it is the right thing to do. 60 years after the war and expecting Europe to defend itself is not a lot to ask for. I think its pretty damning of Europeans that so many still rather rely on the US for their defence.

It's all about economics and politics ...

The European countries don't have to spend extra money on defense if the U.S. is there.
They get an influx of U.S. dollars by having the bases there
They get to blame the U.S. when things go badly, "It wasn't me!"

Personally, I would prefer to limit our bases to a few in a couple of countries and shut the rest down - some of your neighboring governments wouldn't like that very much as the loss of revenue would be substantial.

Oh, and England isn't the 51st state; Blair is getting something he wants by siding with Bush. It does you no good to insult an entire country because of what their government is doing. England is nobody's dog; England, like every other country, has interests it wants to fulfill. Since they still refer to us as the "colonies"; I would think that many from the U.K. would take great offense to your comments.

This is what I would like to convince my fellow Europeans is the right thing to do.

Just to add oil to the fire, there is a demonstration going on in Italy now about the extension of an American base there. One party want the American extension because of the money, one party doesn't want the Americans there at all. One politician being flippant about the whole affair but unaware hit the nail on the head said, hate the Americans if you want but take their money.

I bet there is a majority of British wondering just what Blair got because I bet the majority are clueless. That is not the US's fault, that is Blair's fault for being such an arsehole and wanting to dance in Bush's shadow.

Exactly ... the big dog tends to crap anywhere it wants. I'm not justifying it ... just understanding it for what it is.

You might want to clue your Grand Children in on the China thing. Still a pretty big gap to close, all things considered. You know, when it all comes down, we are still a slimmy Western Democracy, which sort of makes us one of those guys that isn't likely to slip quietly into the night.

I never wonder ...

All we would have to do to make you happy, is:

Do whatever you want us to do, even when that goes against our own best interests.

Be there when you need us ... but go away otherwise.

Take whatever advice you give as defacto truth ... even when you have shown time and again that you are at least as fucked up as we are.

Come to think of it ... you would probably still have those feelings.
