It isd always the case that when a new Microsoft OS comes out there are bugs, and a shortage of stable drivers for some hardware. My clients see the ads and they are all asking me about Vista. I tell them to wait at least till Service Pack 1 comes out, preferably till its time to do a major replacement of machines. If they need one or two machines before then, XP is still a more stable choice and will run better on low end hardware. Service Pack 1 is generally about 6-12 months after the initial release. Dell always offers some machines with the old OS when the new one comes out, for their business customers who don't want to rush into a new OS, or don't want to mix in a different platform without fully testing it first. Often they can be obtained with upgrade certificates. OTOH, if you are about to buy a SOTA hot machine anyway, and like to experiment with your PC, you might as well jump in with both feet and get Vista. Be prepared for a bumpy start. And be sure your favorite apps will run on it.
