lol.  Umm.  ok.  Hmmm.

A retail box version is the one with all the pretty graphics on it that you can buy at any chain store like Best Buy.  The OEMs come in plain brown or white packaging.  The retail versions are the ones that come with the manufacturers warranty and support, whereas OEM versions are the responsibility of the vendor.

I see Bestbuy's search feature is as useless as tits on a bull, so I found a couple other links for you.

This is what they look like:

http://www.maxtorsolutions.com/en/ToolBox/Product_Grid/index.html

And here they are for sale at Amazon.  I have no idea how competitive they are, but it will give you an idea.

http://www.amazon.com/Maxtor-Personal-Storage-External-U01E200/dp/B000CDXTXK

They come with all the software necessary to make them work.  You can even use Backup in Windows XP to do automatic backups of directories or entire drives on a schedule.  A handy dandy little unit.  Shame on me for being too bloody lazy to set mine up.

And on the topic of free AV software, Avast! is the best free AV program available by far and it simply slaughters Norton and Mcaffee, both of which want your firstborn as a downpayment for a subscription to their shitware.

Aileen68 -> RE: My pc crashed!!! (2/14/2007 4:18:15 AM)

Thanks.  I did warn that I'm clueless with the tech stuff.

SirKenin -> RE: My pc crashed!!! (2/14/2007 4:59:52 AM)

No probs.  Hopefully that description was a little easier to understand.  [:)]

Aubre -> RE: My pc crashed!!! (2/14/2007 5:54:44 AM)

Aileen: OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer.

LaTigresse: The one thing I can guarantee you a hard drive will do is that it will eventually fail. I used to work in a PC shop where my boss was a Holy Roller, he used to like to say "It is appointed all hard drives once to die."

Gauge: I'm a Solaris admin and a Linux geek from way back to 1994, I don't need Microsoft.

With all due respect to you and others, for the life of me I cannot understand why in God's name someone in the computer technical field would bash Microsoft Windows operating systems... if it weren't for Microsoft, 3/4 of you would be out of work.

Because as an IT professional, Microsoft has since Windows 3.1 failed to deliver on their promises, while other distributions and solutions DO deliver.

The development environment on Windows is so inferior, it doesn't even ship with a compiler, perl, a webserver which is secure, stable, capable and integrated with databases from Oracle to DB2 to MySQL ( shudder ) to Postgresql ( shudder, just a bit less.. ) ( Man do I *love* that Oracle support... ), much less a complete Tomcat stack.

quote:

I love the technogeeks that rip Microsoft... kind of like shooting one's self in the foot to prove what a wonderful marksman they are.

Not all of us get paid by the hour to sit and watch windows reinstall, or to examine the results of Hijack This. Some people actually use these computers as tools, to facilitate their work. And when it comes to tools, Microsoft space is hardly worth considering.

quote:

There are advantages to alternate operating systems and once the majority of computer users worldwide figure that out, Windows will be on the downfall... but until then...

We will continue moving the heavy freight with Linux.

Again I state that Microsoft's failings pays most IT professionals bills whether you like it or not.

IF you consider the guy sitting there reloading windows (or gparteding down an image ) an IT Professional. I know it's convenient for companies to CALL them "Exempt", for payroll purposes, considering all the free overtime the companies get, but let's not fool ourselves. There is a WORLD of difference b/t first tier tech support and a PROFESSIONAL.

That's like calling "Fry-Bitch" at a McD's a Pro.

The guy who creates and operates the helpdesk handling 1000 people is the Professional. The drones are just another damn payroll expense, who when you get down to it, don't add a penny of value to the entire world of commerce.

When the drones are called, it's because REAL WORK has stopped, and the people doing REAL WORK ( That which creates revenue ) need the drones to re-image the damn box, or something trivial.

Now, if you're in the business of owning and operating helpdesks, consider that the drones ARE doing REAL WORK, but not for the people paying the bill!

So in the sense that Jim Alchins failed design has enabled an industry of people who do nothing but decrease the productivity and profitability of people doing real work, there is some financial upside.

Just not to the people who BUY Windows. The value of windows is to the people who SUPPORT windows.

Friction, artificially created via a series of Just Plain Dumb design choices. In terms of process re-engineering friction at the boundaries of domains of action and responsibility is something to be minimized.

So why pay to add more?

Using Windows just makes BAD BUSINESS SENSE.

"Let someone else do it."

Actually, thinking back, I believe the lesson he was trying to convey is:

First Rule of Computer Club is store everything in My Documents.

The second rule of Computer Club is STORE EVERYTHING IN MY DOCUMENTS.

Third rule of Computer Club is copy My Documents to a USB Key every week.

Staples. Thirty Bucks. Done.

Not exactly.  The best way to do it is to have it automatically backed up to an external device, because people that remember to backup on a regular basis are an exception as opposed to the rule.  The other thing to do if at all possible is to move the Documents folder to a second harddrive in the computer.  It is somewhat redundant, but redundancy is better than data loss.

I'm trying to stay focused on what's accessible to Jane Margarita, and while Best Practices focus on automated processes to removable, rotated media, I think it's too much to expect from the target audience.

People can handle "Grab USB key off of shelf", by getting in the habit of saving to your home directory, and ensuring THAT is backed up at regular intervals, you also protect against the theft or destruction of the machine in fire, etc.

And a NICE powersupply failure will take out BOTH of those harddrive servos.

I ever tell the story of the call where they "ALL OF A SUDDEN" went back a week? Turns out the ex-IT-dude set up mirrored harddrives in hot-swap cages, and their backup was every day, put in a drive, let it rebuild the array, and then pull it. Worked FINE until the drive in the box failed, and it used the data on the "Backup" cart to rebuild.

By "FINE" I mean slow as shit, and an $8000.00 bill to fix.

SirKenin -> RE: My pc crashed!!! (2/14/2007 9:42:52 AM)

Yes, a PSU surge can take out both drives.  I have seen that happen.  However, a PSU surge will not take out the external.  I am pretty sure I was very clear that the solution incorporated two internal drives and an external.  I do not recommend RAID 1 arrays for home usage in general, although there is the rare occasion where they are mandated.  I have a file server, otherwise my main workstation would have to be RAID.

Check out the bit about the online scanner which uses multiple a/v products to detect malware.

I also recommend the NOD32 by ESET.

GOOD! With NAV, you need to make SURE you do... It all goes horribly, horribly wrong if it expires out.

And don't make the horrible mistake of trying to remove it AFTER it expires...you are right , I had to to to their forums and figure out how to do it. Mcafee is just as bad.

? For Business or Pleasure?

We move the heavy freight with a combination of Red Hat Enterprise Linux ( for anything facing the public, or mission critical ) down to I guess Red Hat 5.0 for a legacy oracle server ( oracle001.bizdomain.com -- It's been a long time baby, and it still emails out sales analysis spreadsheets every morning... ), with my personal use being on FC6.

domiguy -> RE: My pc crashed!!! (2/16/2007 10:30:24 PM)

Your computer probably crashed due to PSRF ...You need to get it looked at.

Aileen68 -> RE: My pc crashed!!! (2/16/2007 11:08:05 PM)

I know I'm going to regret this...
What is PSRF?

windchymes -> RE: My pc crashed!!! (2/17/2007 5:13:45 AM)

Like a gag from family guy, that joke is totally unrelated to the plot in this thread.
