ORIGINAL: Gauge With all due respect to you and others, for the life of me I cannot understand why in God's name someone in the computer technical field would bash Microsoft Windows operating systems... if it weren't for Microsoft, 3/4 of you would be out of work. Because as an IT professional, Microsoft has since Windows 3.1 failed to deliver on their promises, while other distributions and solutions DO deliver. The development environment on Windows is so inferior, it doesn't even ship with a compiler, perl, a webserver which is secure, stable, capable and integrated with databases from Oracle to DB2 to MySQL ( shudder ) to Postgresql ( shudder, just a bit less.. ) ( Man do I *love* that Oracle support... ), much less a complete Tomcat stack. quote:
I love the technogeeks that rip Microsoft... kind of like shooting one's self in the foot to prove what a wonderful marksman they are. Not all of us get paid by the hour to sit and watch windows reinstall, or to examine the results of Hijack This. Some people actually use these computers as tools, to facilitate their work. And when it comes to tools, Microsoft space is hardly worth considering. quote:
There are advantages to alternate operating systems and once the majority of computer users worldwide figure that out, Windows will be on the downfall... but until then... We will continue moving the heavy freight with Linux. Again I state that Microsoft's failings pays most IT professionals bills whether you like it or not. IF you consider the guy sitting there reloading windows (or gparteding down an image ) an IT Professional. I know it's convenient for companies to CALL them "Exempt", for payroll purposes, considering all the free overtime the companies get, but let's not fool ourselves. There is a WORLD of difference b/t first tier tech support and a PROFESSIONAL. That's like calling "Fry-Bitch" at a McD's a Pro. The guy who creates and operates the helpdesk handling 1000 people is the Professional. The drones are just another damn payroll expense, who when you get down to it, don't add a penny of value to the entire world of commerce. When the drones are called, it's because REAL WORK has stopped, and the people doing REAL WORK ( That which creates revenue ) need the drones to re-image the damn box, or something trivial. Now, if you're in the business of owning and operating helpdesks, consider that the drones ARE doing REAL WORK, but not for the people paying the bill! So in the sense that Jim Alchins failed design has enabled an industry of people who do nothing but decrease the productivity and profitability of people doing real work, there is some financial upside. Just not to the people who BUY Windows. The value of windows is to the people who SUPPORT windows. Friction, artificially created via a series of Just Plain Dumb design choices. In terms of process re-engineering friction at the boundaries of domains of action and responsibility is something to be minimized. So why pay to add more? Using Windows just makes BAD BUSINESS SENSE.
