Well, Considering that Jim Alchin was RESPONSIBLE for Vista? He laid the huge steaming turd, after failing to deliver the promises he'd been making since 1991-1992.

Uh oh, here comes the frothing at the mouth ALL CAPS attack!

Why is it a huge steaming turd?  Because of your issues with M$ or Allchin (whose name you can't even spell) or who knows what else?  Have you even used it or are your feelings purely based on your personal baggage?

That's 15 years of keeping a job despite failing over and over again.

Oh, so it's just jealousy.  Why didn't you say that in the beginning and save us all this trouble?

Yeah, I'm sure they kept him around until he retired because he kept failing and failing.  That makes loads of sense.

That's noteworthy.

No, not really.

And MS-Paint is fun. Solitare, Minesweeper. WOW, they REALLY needed to get Vista out the door. Shit, they even ripped off the freaking VA, who has been calling THEIR software Vista for decades...

The OS isn't called Vista, it's 'Windows Vista' and it's been granted a trademark by the US trademark office, which probably wouldn't have happen if anyone had disputed it.  The VA uses VistA, which is a bodged acronym for Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture .  If the VA felt they were being "ripped off," I'm sure they would have done something about it.  That makes sense too, doesn't it?

SirKenin -> RE: My pc crashed!!! (2/13/2007 8:17:18 PM)

How can you blame the computer when you were not savvy enough to protect yourself?  That is user error, not computer error.

Anyways, Macs are the industry standard for graphics design as you know.  To me anything named after a fruit is not worthy of my desktop, and I really do not care for the fruit that much either.  However, if it is strictly business in that industry a Mac would certainly be the way to go for you.

Because as an IT professional, Microsoft has since Windows 3.1 failed to deliver on their promises, while other distributions and solutions DO deliver.

The development environment on Windows is so inferior, it doesn't even ship with a compiler, perl, a webserver which is secure, stable, capable and integrated with databases from Oracle to DB2 to MySQL ( shudder ) to Postgresql ( shudder, just a bit less.. ) ( Man do I *love* that Oracle support... ), much less a complete Tomcat stack.

Not all of us get paid by the hour to sit and watch windows reinstall, or to examine the results of Hijack This. Some people actually use these computers as tools, to facilitate their work. And when it comes to tools, Microsoft space is hardly worth considering.

I have real work to do on computers, like posting this. I don't bother with toys. I oversee a few support groups, one of which handles the desktops. The question, as always in business, "What VALUE does using Vista bring me?"

None. Even UAC is sucking mightily. "Did you want to copy a file to Program Files?" Duh. Welcome to Whack-a-Dialog-Box. Where there is so little signal, and so much noise, no-one reads them anymore, so the one that warns of EVIL just gets clicked anyway. There goes the supposed security benefits.

Contempt. What's he done? I ask, and ask, and ask, but no one can tell me. He kept PROMISING all sorts of shiny shit, in fact THE SAME SHIT they're promising in $NEXT_BIG_MSFT_OS. Been there, done that, have the Windows 95 SWAG kit.

Not especially. OOH, they capped the last 'A'. That changes the way it sounds so much, doesn't it?

And when has the Government ever done anything that makes sense?

Aileen ---

First off, sympathies on your crash! My (Mac) hard drive committed suicide a few years ago, and I felt like I'd lost a part of my brain.

I'm no expert, but I've heard that Macs are far more resistant to viruses that PCs are. I've never heard of a virus's targeting a Mac.

I use iMacs at home and work, and love them.

Cheers,

DC

Again I state that Microsoft's failings pays most IT professionals bills whether you like it or not.

My pc crashed yesterday.  It's a custom made computer made by a friend who does that kind of stuff.  It's about four years old (ancient I know) but was upgraded about two years ago.  Anyway...got a message that I had a possible worm.  Ran a scan which got up to about 50,000 files scanned and 105 threats found.  Major threats.  Trojans, worms viruses.  Lovely!  It never quite finished scanning because that's when everything froze up.  Rebooted.  Opening screen is blue with some of my desktop icons on it.  All unresponsive to the mouse.  Unplugged it and sent it off to the guy who builds them.  I'm only hoping that he's able to recover some photos on it that I had yet to back up.
Anyway...I'll most likely have it fixed if possible, but I am in the market for a Mac.
I don't know much about them, but I hear that they aren't nearly as vulnerable to threats.  Is this true?  I'll be using the Mac for graphic design work (an industry standard) and I assume that the Mac Pro will be sufficient.  The computer will be used strictly as a work computer.  I am really not techy at all and know nothing about all of the details that they list with the computers.  Would one of the I Macs be good too...in terms of memory, speed, things like that?  See, I don't even know the proper wording.  :)
Thanks.

Hi Aileen,

Sorry to hear about your computer problems. These beasties are great when they work, but frustrating when they don't!

If you want to buy a Mac, that's fine, but don't think that they aren't just as vulnerable to viruses and mal-ware as the PCs are. You will still have to do all of the same kinds of things on the Mac to protect yourself as you do on the PC. You should have a firewall, anti-virus, and anti-spyware, etc.

It appears that you have just learned one very important lesson: you have to back up your documents! Buy an external hard drive (USB or FireWire) and backup your documents on a regular basis. You can even purchase software that will do this for you automatically.

Good luck on your new adventure!

If you by the Maxtor Maxstore retail box version, it comes with the backup software.  There is even software included with Windows XP that will automatically backup to another device, including tape backups (yes, I'm a sad, sad little boy.  I have a 30GB tape backup in one of my servers. *sigh*).

Christ, is that untrue.  AVG is free (well, the free version of AVG is free) and it's worth a whole lot more than nothing.
