Well no thats why we are discussing it, everyone said XP was highly unstable and they were right, compared to the smaller O/S's win XP is dodgy but then again the interbet and software in general has gotten so advanced that its bound to happen, i do think Microsoft should have just bought out add-ons to win XP rather than a whole new O/S.

farglebargle -> RE: My pc crashed!!! (2/13/2007 11:11:01 AM)

Microsoft's BIG claim has always been, "You don't need to retrain users", so given that as a starting point, there should be no operational differences between XP and Vista. Any that exist are a failure of Microsofts vision.

The real question is, "If Vista is so great, Why did Jim Alchin lose his job"?

Nope. The experience with Linux proves otherwise. Windows sucks because the fundamental design sucks, and for the past, what, 15 Years, all that's been done is to add MORE layers of crap, to the point where 2.4 GHz Celerons with 1/2 Gb memory don't have the oomph to run a .Net application. ( Which says something BOTH about Windows and .Net )....

If it's the Net, and software in general, how can we host 100 GUI users on a single Linux server?

Yes, my boots need a serious cleaning after trudging thru the barnyard this morning and then snow, ice and salt.

RWAble -> RE: My pc crashed!!! (2/13/2007 11:16:01 AM)

NEVER EVER NEVER USE Norton. They invade windows way more than needs to be. I use Zone Alarm. Good for PC or Mac, coupled with Blue Ice firewall and you are completely protected.
Norton updates weekly. One of their problems. Zone Alarm updates continually, never stopping.

bludemonn -> RE: My pc crashed!!! (2/13/2007 11:17:28 AM)

Maybe he was constantly late!? I do agree with the other post about waiting for certain 'bugs' to be fixed, i think windows leak out crackable versions so that hackers can find weakspots in the system just as they did with XP (you know the virus that booted you off the net after 30 seconds!) then they send you updates which usually conflict with software you have (like Norton!) and simple things become rather expensive! Oh well we live in hope

Hmmmmmm, no, just cleaned and oiled.

bludemonn -> RE: My pc crashed!!! (2/13/2007 11:27:01 AM)

*horribly off topic for a sec* *kneels at Ms LaTigresses booted feet taking one boot at a time upon his lap and applying a moist cloth to clean away the mud, salt and other debris, takes a clean cloth and applies a small amount of boot polish working it in before buffing slightly, applies some oil to finish off then passes out at her feet due to trembling so much at the thought....

Enron made a lot of money too, for a while. What has MSFT *really* brought to the table, that other people don't already provided faster, cheaper, and better?

The old, "Wanted to spend more time with my family", works too, when covering up the continued failure.

When did Alchin start promising "The Filesystem of the Gods"? 1990? 1991? 1992? Cairo was scheduled for 1994 shipping. Did Alchin deliver? No.

The then put Vines-Dude in charge of NT, screwing Cutler.

Then in 99, he got put in charge of the whole O/S division. Which considering that Apache then took over the internet, wasn't too good of a showing either.

Yes, Windows has been a colossal failure. Oh wait, no it hasn't.

M$ announced in September of 2005 that Allchin would retire when Vista shipped.  He did just that.  Where is this coverup?

What's your beef with Allchin?  Was he fucking your wife behind your back or something?  What does that have to do with Vista again?

Well, Considering that Jim Alchin was RESPONSIBLE for Vista? He laid the huge steaming turd, after failing to deliver the promises he'd been making since 1991-1992. That's 15 years of keeping a job despite failing over and over again.

That's noteworthy.

And MS-Paint is fun. Solitare, Minesweeper. WOW, they REALLY needed to get Vista out the door. Shit, they even ripped off the freaking VA, who has been calling THEIR software Vista for decades...

But hey, enjoy paying for it.

Gauge -> RE: My pc crashed!!! (2/13/2007 1:53:07 PM)

There are some nice forensic data recovery programs out there if you want to try to get the files off of your old system. A few are free which make them even more attractive.

If you want to try to disinfect your system there are a few great programs on www.majorgeeks.com just look in the upper right-hand corner of the website for the Suggested Freeware and go to town... you have nothing to lose at this point.

Gauge -> RE: My pc crashed!!! (2/13/2007 1:59:53 PM)

With all due respect to you and others, for the life of me I cannot understand why in God's name someone in the computer technical field would bash Microsoft Windows operating systems... if it weren't for Microsoft, 3/4 of you would be out of work.

I love the technogeeks that rip Microsoft... kind of like shooting one's self in the foot to prove what a wonderful marksman they are.

There are advantages to alternate operating systems and once the majority of computer users worldwide figure that out, Windows will be on the downfall... but until then...

bludemonn -> RE: My pc crashed!!! (2/13/2007 2:06:08 PM)

Windows Vista will be best enjoyed....free

windchymes -> RE: My pc crashed!!! (2/13/2007 2:42:14 PM)

I've been happy with my free AVG anti-virus, Ad-Aware, CrapCleaner, and Spyware Blaster.  My computer is five years old now, yikes, but still has plenty of memory and (knock on wood) it's running great.  It crashed on me about 3 years ago, but I was able to recover it, surprisingly with the Ad-Aware.  Something came in through a "registry key", and when I "quaranteened" it, it recovered.  Go figure.

I can't give any advice about the Mac's, other than people who use them  love them.  But I know they have some limitations that PC's don't have.  It's just a matter of do the benefits outweigh the limitations?  When my PC goes kaput, I'm definitely going to check the Mac's out, but I honestly don't know what my final decision will be.
