My brother has been recalled.  Spent 5 years in the military, did a year or so in Iraq and got out.  Went on to start his career in something else with the fed gov.  Now they want him to go BACK to Iraq with a group of weekend warriors.  He's trying to fight it, as my mother is - but so far his boss said there isnt anything they can do.  They're going higher up.  Hopefully it'll work.  It feels almost like we're fighting for his life.  The situation over there (i hear is worse) and not being in a regular army unit (i hear) is worse.  And well, he got out LAST time unharmed.  They want to go up the chain of command, do the right thing, if need be file an appeal.  All i can think is, doing the right thing - generally gets you screwed.  (esp with the gov)

Anyone else have any ideas?  Granted they have all these ideas - none of them are fool proof.  Be nice to hear if anyone else has already tried this?  Any success?

Good luck... My brother just got back from Iraq and is waiting for the orders back.  Now with the set up gear all at the ready and pointed at Iran...he doesn't think he stands a chance.

He could try what Watatda (sp) did and refuse to serve because  of illegal/immoral orders and stand trial.  His was a mistrial... so who knows, it could work... it all seems terribly amoral to me.

I do hope your family has luck in it your efforts

Sarcastic political response: Now, remember we don't have a draft. We just have soldiers serving against their will.

Sympathetic personal response: I'm so very sorry to hear this, lilsister! It's a long-shot, but you could try contacting your representative or senator.

As a former Marine, I have some bad news; they tell you up front, when you enlist, that you have an eight year contract.  It's broken down into a four (or sometimes two) year enlistment, followed by the balance of that eight years in the "Individual Ready Reserve."  The good news is that he'll have a chance to get out shortly after that eight years expires; short of a draft, they cannot force too many 'administrative extensions.'

Sorry for the bad news.  The good news, is that if he's willing to do another enlistment term, he could join the Navy or Air Force and be assured a less life threatening deployment.

Our Senators refuse to even have a discussion about the war on the Senate floor.  It is absolutely remarkable to me that in all these years of the war, they have not had a single political debate about it.

Shameful.

Agreed. But an individual legislator might be able to help in this particular case--though, as I said, it's a long-shot.

I told people that in the last election, it doesnt matter who wins control of congress. The Congress is not going to stop the war! Democrats are simply spewing a lot of anti-war talk because that is a nice way to get votes. They are playing the anti-war vote for fools! When push comes to shove, the Dems will not do anything to stop or slow down this war.
The political parties in the US right now are practically mirror images of each other except for a few social-domestic issues.

Its going to be a tough fight if you are in the service because that means you did volunteer for the service. There is no military draft. So trying to get any sympathy for your fight will be hard to get even among war critics. Whatada is being called everything from a traitor to a coward. And he will never shake that label now.
You can't pick and choose which wars you want to fight. The army doesn't work that way nor has it ever worked that way.

I never understood why people join the military voluntarily and then want out the minute a war starts. It really does make it look like all you wanted was the benefits. You wanted those education discounts. You wanted those cheap government rates. You wanted insurance for everyone in your family, etc... You get those benefits because you are basically saying that you are willing to die for this nation. If you are not willing to make that sacrifice, why the hell did you sign that form?

This isnt a political debate.  Its finding ways to get out of the recall.  Legal ways, mind you.  He went through FLETC and he's doing something else for the gov.  We're hoping it gives a good leg to stand on.  i understand he's in the "ready reserves" as you put it.

Good idea on joining something like the navy or AirForce.  Unfortunetly, other then losing his life - he's also just started his career.  DC, they're talking about taking it to the senator.  Puella thanks for the advice on the refusal to serve.  He got the notice awhile ago.  My personal opionon is to go AWOL down to mexico - )  What they're thinking is - not appearing at the date/time what notice?  Who got a notice?  ect) - making the gov track him down and once that happens try going through the legal system.  (with appeal and all if it fails).  Its just a thin line between a dishonorable discharge (losing his career) and then losing his life.  Bah - i dont know what he'll do, but i'd love to offer him suggestions.  But atm - my family is going through the connects in the Gov to see if anything is possible.  I'm not sure if my father if stills has any strings with any Generals or what not, been awhile since he was in the military.

IMO  when it comes down to it - life or career (doing the right thing and dying or doing the wrong thing/suffering the consequences/but saving your ass) i'm all for life.

Bah - i'm not sure what to do to help. = (  So if anyone has any more suggestions, i'm all ears.

I understand that Canada is welcoming all our cowards with wide open arms, but he may never be able to come back.

Good riddance anyway. Eh.

People seem to be overlooking the fact that the soldier in question already did a year in Iraq.

I'm sure BigDogs will be enlisting any day now.

Not all of them.

They cannot get enough votes to force a debate.

I suspect next election will be "Yer Fired 2" for the Republicans.

One of the most amusing things I have ever read, dcnovice.

I second it, please clarify your enlistment plans, BigDogs.

Although I suspect you are simply another armchair warmonger.

Thanks! Of course, with my luck, it'll turn out he was in the service for 20 years.

Sure.  Monkeyboy is a coward.

I know I am stretching things because the President is not technically considered a federal agent.

And he was not AWOL for at least part of his enlistment.

Feel better now?

What's laughable is you actually think the Democrats are going to stop the war. If anything, the next president will expand it. Who are the Dems going to nominate? Hillary? She was in favor of the Iraq war. She's not anti-war. Obama doesn't stand a chance.

Plus the issue is meaningless if something serious happens like if Musharaff is assassinated. If that event occurs, we got a clusterf*** on our hands. And we may be forced into a war with Pakistan. And that will be MUCH bloodier than Iraq. That is a nation that has nuclear weapons and in the event of a coup, the government replacing the current one will be pro-Taliban and pro-AlQueda. Which means a direct threat to the US. And Al-Queda will be in possession of nuclear weapons.
India would almost certainly invade that country.

That entire region can completely fall apart very quickly. There has already been over a dozen assassination attempts on Pervez Musharaff over the past 5 years. They are going to get him eventually.

If Al-Queda ends up with nukes, they have the ability to kill countless millions of people.

Are you honestly suggesting the war should be stopped?

Do you personally think the war was a bad idea to begin with?

Are you implying that the war is unwinnable and is a cluster fuck of biblical proportions visited upon the citizenry of this planet by the Special Education Reject that dumbfuckistan elected president?

The Republicans had the opportunity to...

a) not start the war.

b) end the war.

And they did not do this.  Logically, it follows that the Democrats expanding the war would be simply following the lovely example set by Monkeyboy.

Please clarify your objection.
