As a former Marine, I have some bad news; they tell you up front, when you enlist, that you have an eight year contract. It's broken down into a four (or sometimes two) year enlistment, followed by the balance of that eight years in the "Individual Ready Reserve." The good news is that he'll have a chance to get out shortly after that eight years expires; short of a draft, they cannot force too many 'administrative extensions.' Sorry for the bad news. The good news, is that if he's willing to do another enlistment term, he could join the Navy or Air Force and be assured a less life threatening deployment. Stephan
