In Canada a "sub" is a sandwich (not sure if that terminology is used elsewhere) and Goddess knows what a dom is. I believe it is suppossed to be in caps though Elegant; as in DOM or DOMME instead of dominant *nods kinda sagely*. Yes, I agree it is a rather irritating use of language.

"dom" is the universally recognized non-word to the song "Hear Comes the Bride" often sung as "dom dom da-dom....."

Now of all the songs with dom in them, you had to pick the wedding song. LOL

No offense meant here either but I agree with Whiplash in regards  to how your photo reads – not saying it is right or wrong but based on your photo I always thought you were a Dominant until this thread

I will only make comments with regards to elements of your picture.  I mean no offense.. please hear me out..
  • The angle of the camera is from below you.  Where as you appear to be standing above the viewer.  Hence a suggestion by angle of shot that you are in a position over the viewer.   Like they are kneeing on the floor looking at you.
  • Gym Equipment in the background.  Small subtle thing... this is associated with being athletic.  Althlets are competitive and like to kick ass.
  • The dress you are wearing is Bold - Black and White design.  This may suggest that you have a powerful persona, and suggests it's either one way or not with you.  Hence Black or White... My way or the highway type of feel to it.
  • You body position is not in a submissive stance.  Looks like you are expressing "Well what the hell are you going to do about it now" type of look.  Turn you body more sideways to the camera.. More like the models and actresses do for camera poses... You were working with the hand on the hip thing... these are the same Moves that Paris Hilton and others do.. and Paris is a powerful creature!!  Personally I would throw away the whole hand on the hip thing.. if you want to elude to being more submissive...

I'm not trying to be mean or beat up on you here... just provide some honest feedback, to what I see happening with your picture shot...

I found this to be an interesting observation...I'm honestly sort of curious as to what you'd say about my own pics since I also get accused of seeming "unsubmissive" in some (not all) of them.

One of my old jokes is that you're not a "true submissive" until you've been told you're a fake/player/wannabe at least five times.

Dnomyar -> RE: What does a sub look/sound like? (3/6/2007 10:48:37 AM)

afeathr most subs are 5'3 on average.  So your to tall to be a sub. Your name isnt Subway or Quiznos ect. so that also leaves you out.  . You probably dont taste like meatballs or Italian so that leaves you out. You arent yellow so that leaves you out. What makes you think that you are a sub??

I received a message today that started me thinking... and perhaps this question has been asked before but here goes anyway. The message I received said exactly this (verbatim): "i must say , your words and pix do not seem submissive. this is by no means a criticism,not at all, just a casual observation"

My question is:  What does a sub look / sound like?  How do they carry themselves, and talk to others?  Is there some sort of expectation when it comes to a subs personality or appearance?

Respectfully,

i dress in whatever is comfortable, usually jeans and a shirt. i'm just like everyone else in this world, no defects, deformaties, etc. Even if i did have a defect of some sort, my Dom wouldn't care. i like who i am and wouldn't change, i talk to people respectfully and am a caring person. And i'm outgoing. To me that's who i am

Shylahgirl -> RE: What does a sub look/sound like? (3/6/2007 4:12:01 PM)

(I apoligise for any miss spellings)

A slave/submissive looks and sounds how ever they want... unless the Master/Mistress intreucts them other wise. I know men who are big bear types who will submit to women that are 5 ft tall and 8olb. I know one man with a black belt in martal arts and who used to be a merein and he serves a small woman. I know women who are the butchest lesbians and they are the most submissive women I have ever met (submissive doesn't mean doormat).

A happy sub will have high self esteme and ceary them selves accordingly. Just because someone is out spoken and looks like they have good self estem doesn't mean that they have to be domanint.

When speaking with others I will state my opinion. When Master asks my opinion I will give it and it doesn't matter if it's diffrent then his. I look everyone in the eye when speaking to them... the only time my eyes are down cast is when I am in high protocal service mode and even then I use the 6 foot gaze, so I can see what's going on around me.

I am out sponke and at times I'm an evil bitch (I'm not a bitch to master), and if that makes me less of a sub in someone elses eyes then, guess what, I'm not their sub so it doesn't matter :D

Shylah

afeathr -> RE: What does a sub look/sound like? (3/6/2007 5:19:20 PM)

Thanks for the input:  a little info about the pic...

1) It was taken on my camera with the timer set... no one was available to take any pics of me so all of the pics are kind of like that.  There are only a few places in that house that are high enough to take pics from.  2) The dress was new, and I thought it looked good on me so I took a pic of it.  3) Yes, that's athletic equipment -- a treadmill.  I found it interesting that you assumed that would make people think I am an athlete -- there are so many more people that just want to stay in shape.  4)  The "hand on the hip" thing was merely to give some interest to the pic -- it means nothing to me.  I am not particularly photogenic and have been given some tips in my lifetime of how to look more interesting in pics -- that was merely one of them.

afeathr -> RE: What does a sub look/sound like? (3/6/2007 5:20:33 PM)

Something I find to be interesting as well:

Some people see a "sub" as a sandwich

Others see a "sub" as a boat in the water

Neither of which are any more true that a "sub" being a person.  LOL

Maybe this should fuel a new thread...

I tend to agree that you look "unsubmissive" (leaning toward dominating) in some of them, in others you look very kittenish and sexy <smiles>.  However, if your actions in person are submissive -- or you tell me you are submissive -- then *that* is what you are -- IMHO.

GeekyGirl -> RE: What does a sub look/sound like? (3/6/2007 5:26:21 PM)

Thanks afeathr.

You don't look dominating to me in your pics...just like a woman with confidence! :)

azzmaster -> RE: What does a sub look/sound like? (3/6/2007 5:34:20 PM)

anyfool can call theselves or claim to be a sub, a domor the king of persia 4 that matter. when i look for a sub, i look for someone that appears to be refined, gentle, no direct eye contact, pleasant look on their face, soft spoken, very polite... i have even seen some ladies stating they r dommes with that appearance...i tend to think not everyone is in touch with thier true nature.

GeekyGirl -> RE: What does a sub look/sound like? (3/6/2007 5:45:55 PM)

Hmm...I don't fit any of azz's standards but I'm sure any dominant who's gone out with me as no doubts as to my submissive nature.
I am quite fond of eye contact and "soft spoken" has never been something which described me. I don't think I'm refined either...I've been told I have a brash and abrasive personality. I don't think it has anything to do with not being in touch with my true nature and everything to do with the fact that different dominants seek different things. I have met many dominants who cherished my personality and took a special pleasure in knowing that such a strong, out going woman was willing to kneel at their feet.

azzmaster -> RE: What does a sub look/sound like? (3/6/2007 5:48:33 PM)

the beautiful thing about life is there is someone for everyone

GeekyGirl -> RE: What does a sub look/sound like? (3/6/2007 5:49:23 PM)

I'll agree with that azz :) What works for you is your own business...Different strokes for different folks :)

domiguy -> RE: What does a sub look/sound like? (3/6/2007 6:01:15 PM)

Well it appears to be what could only be desribed as a "mysterious bulge" is in your second picture....Some sort of an optical illusion? Or maybe you simply have a cock.
The bulge is rather pronounced....

Other than that you are a hottie!  I dig tall chicks!  But most importantly tall chicks dig me....I'd probably throw you a bone if you would get rid of that meat in your drawers.

Aine -> RE: What does a sub look/sound like? (3/6/2007 6:24:38 PM)

Since when does soft-spoken equate with having a submissive nature?  I know plenty of nillas and Dominants who are very soft spoken, quiet, yet utterly powerful and commanding that to me is even more amplified through their quiet and soft spoken nature.

On that note, does that mean you have to be loud mouthed to be Dominant?

Bunk notion if you ask me.

I read this, and laughed my ass off.
When I`m not in the company of people who I`m currently submitting to, I`m typically out-spoken, rude (I burp in public! What a fine lady I am!), occasionally stare at people just to make them uncomfortable, and dress crudely. Wow. I just really don`t appreciate the insinuation that if you don`t act a certain way, you're "not really in touch with your true nature". If you can`t understand that not every submissive acts exactly the same and has the same characteristics, then that`s your ignorance, and you might want to work on that. In the meantime, perhaps re-consider using a revised version of the age-old bullshit "You`re not a REAL SUB if....."

OK... here's the deal, this is what my thoughts... in general on pictures for sub look... a picture is worth a thousand words, so it's said...
  • Kill the hand on hips for frontal body shots
  • Hand on hips for side body shots only.  Use your right or left.  Make the angle of your body very small... where the viewer sees more of your side vs. the front of your body.  Hand on hips only works best for side shoots.
  • I recomend killing hand on hip altogther, because all the powerful models and actresses use that stance.  Society has become mentally brainwashed to this pose now.
  • Hands behind back, neck, or head. Good... Hands above and behind head are also good.
  • Lower you body closer to the floor, ground, bed or what's around you.
  • Camera shots from above you, so the viewer gets the impression they are physically above you.
  • Revealing clothing works.  If you wear a lot of black expose part of your skin.  be it the belly.. more arm and shoulders.. whatever.  The more covered up you are.. the more protected and defensive you appear.  Think of clothing like Armor, the more you cover up, the more defensive you appear.
  • Have a picture taken of yourself, as you see yourself presenting yourself to a Dom/me master/mistress own whatever you call it...

Just my thoughts on the matter... You have to be a little more pretenous with your pictures.  There is nothing wrong with using pretense as long as you are being honest in using it.

azzmaster -> RE: What does a sub look/sound like? (3/6/2007 8:28:25 PM)

whats amusing and of course what i expected is the usual BS about how subs r sposed to be assertive etc etc...what i said in my post was what i look for. i as in azzmaster look for. in case u hadnt noticed i hadnt written 2 any of u asking if u were available. u can be a sub any way u want, its nothing to me
