Getting in real late, I am (or was, im not establised enough to get back into it yet) very active in charity fundraising and activities.  I have been involved in things like bringing christmas to half way houses, shelters and childrens hospitals.  More recently, I am helping to organize a team for a Walk for Life with coworkers through walgreens.

Nice thread, Puella.

As some of you already know, I don't seek to treat symptoms. I'm not a band-aid or pills kind of guy. I look for cures.

Most of our society's problems originate from being forced to play on an unlevel playing field. It's by no accident that 1% of the population owns 50% of the wealth. It's by specific design. And if left unchecked, it will only get worse.

I have spent a great deal of time understanding all this. I've made some mistakes, and have been drawn in by several falsehoods along the way. However, I am pleased to report that I've finally found what I've been looking for.

Yes, I am now actively working towards making a historic change that would level the playing field for all of us here in the US.

Well lets see
I have been auctioned off at leather events supporting several different charities.
HIV Aids support
GLBT centers
HIV testing clinic
NCSF (National Coallition for Sexual Freedom)
Breast Cancer Awareness
I have presented as an educator at various leather events large and small only ever asking for a place to sleep and a meal.
I spent 40+ hours working with Habitat for Humanity, and intend to work a few more projects with them in the future.

I have donated Elegant's time and efforts to various charities as well mostly as an organizer
But also bootblacking for charities, Elegant is also a board member for Southeast Leatherfest chairing the fundraising which after expences the proceeds have been used for fundraising for NCSF and other charities
The new idea for SELF this year is presenting mini grants to smaller groups in the SE region so they can afford to bring in presenters to their groups. (I say donated her time because I chose not to have her work an outside job insead she works for our home based business and thus time spent fundraising for events and causes takes that time away from that work.
I would certainly bet that she would be involved in just as many if not more things if we were not together.

Oh and that doesn't mention cash donations.

You do indeed have good ideas. And if this is what I think it's about....I have faith in you.

I was down at my Daddy's place this last week and we were cruising around. I love the city he lives in because it is filled with craftsman homes, bungalows, and victorian homes. I asked him if there was a historical society to protect these treasures from being bulldozed for two bit condos. I think I may have found a new cause when I move to the area. I would feel very good about preserving the character of the city I plan on making my home

Julia..... Besides your basic outlook /philosophy regarding our current /past governments, I knew there was something else I liked about you ; }

I am a nut when it comes to these types of homes.....and besides my goal for an early retirement, one of the few things left that I want to do in this life is own / live-in one those Victorians that you are talking about. In my opinion, there's nothing finer than those old Craftsman and Victorian homes.

Watching those homes vanish from the landscape is the equivalency of burning to the ground every fine boutique /artesian winery across this country and leaving us all with nothing but Mad Dog 20/20 to drink.

I rather agree with M.... I think your work has been both very smart and nobel.

Not in the US, but I work in the public sector as a finance manager. My job involves generating value for tax payers money. In a nutshell, the aim is to improve the quality of life in the county I live including: attracting new businesses to the area, generating business growth for existing businesses in the area, creating and safeguarding jobs, providing training and learning opportunities, buying property and generating business space at low cost rent to support start up businesses, introducing environment friendly power, inclusion policies to help ethnic minorities get a fair crack of the whip, homelessness projects, unemployment projects, alcohol/drug/physical/sexual abuse projects, helping people who have been out of work through mental health issues such as depression, providing new businesses, social organisations and charities with accounting expertise to generate profits to reinvest or maintain viability (among other things).

My job is to manage the purse strings and make sure the money is spent wisely (which isn't easy considering there are far more issues to tackle than money available) and once projects are approved at board level my job is to achieve as per our project proposal.

I've seen many real business success stories, but then I've seen 14 years old kids who are in a really bad way - for example one kid's parents were heroin addicts and when he was a toddler they used to inject him with heroin for their amusement. Without us, these kids would get very little help, if any.

I took a £12k pay cut, gave up a company car and a bonus to move into the public sector and it is one of the best decisions I've ever made.

At the moment we have a Labour government so funding is reasonable, but when the conservatives are voted in again there'll be huge cut backs (as per usual) and they'll redirect the money to attract businesses to London and "defence" projects - which defeats the object of a government for all of the people, but that's British conservatives for you.

NorthernGent -> RE: A Whole Lotta Bitchin' Goin' On! (3/10/2007 1:02:00 AM)

I can understand those investing their time in sport. If there's one way to keep kids out of trouble it's sport. When I was a young 'un, we had a youth club in our village ran by a local bloke who wasn't paid and just loved to see kids keeping their noses clean and out of trouble.

The club used to have an indoor football court, snooker tables, darts games, weights training, badminton, table tennis and others and we would be in there every night of the week from opening til closing. This was in an area with the highest unemployment rates in the country and alcohol abuse was rife......we really needed the club to keep us on the straight and narrow. Kids are vulnerable without something constructive to occupy their time.

The youth club leader used to give up his saturdays too and take us 'round the country to watch our local team play away games (football). Sometimes we would set off at 7 in the morning and get back after midnight (if we were playing at the other end of the country) which shows the dedication of this bloke. He used to put a bus on (and drive the bus) and take 20 of us and we were all mad on football, so we were as happy as pigs in shit at weekends.

I can honestly say that this bloke's dedication saved some of the kids in our village from a life of crime and young offenders institutes followed by jail at a later age. Consistent unemployment will lead to family breakdown and an unhealthy environment for some kids - it follows that these kids need something constructive to do in their spare time and take their minds off the general mess of a life which exists in their homes.

1. Last week, an illegal immigrant or atleast a non speaking english person came up to my car with a pair of jumper cables. He started speaking spanish and pointing to his jumper cables and to his car down the parking lot. I kept replying with "What? What? I don't speak spanish. No comprende amigo. I'm sorry, I can't help you." And then I left.

2. Over a year ago, some kids where out by a street light begging for money to help with there pee wee football uniforms. Rather than giving away money, I suggested that they needed to work selling good or by doing a car wash. After all, earning money was what I had to do back in the day. For some reason, the parents where pissed at me smarting off about me being a racist but I stood my ground that earning something is better than begging for it. When people work, they appreciate and take better care for stuff they buy.

3. During elections I vote for the lesser of the two evils. Rather than looking for a D, R. or some other letter, I do a little home work on the canidates past and listen to what they are saying now. When feeling out a ballet, if I never heard of the person or people running for a certain position, I don't put my check down for anyone in that catagory.

4. On the free way, I'll stay even with other drivers on my right to keep idiots behind me at the speed limit. I'm helping them and others stay alive. I'm also keeping them from getting a possible ticket.

5. I recycle as much as possible.

6. As long as the front seat is avalible, I'll give a hitch hiker or stranded person a ride for a couple of miles.

7. Various random acts and making sure others are okay.

8. I give advice and wisdom for anyone looking for it. After all, if you give a man a fish, you've feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you've feed him for life.

9. I donate blood and I'm an organ donor.

10. I support cancer and disease research. Fight the cancer and save the Ta Ta's.

Oh and add to the what I "give" to the community I work as an Environmantal Specialist and Safety Trainer, so my job is something that "gives back provides value to the community as well. Currently working on an EPA Superfund cleanup. Dressing up in those fashionable white suits and a respirator cataloging and removing hazardous wastes from a site sending them to an EPA approved facility for destruction/ disposal.

A great thread. Really makes you sit back and take a look at what you give. I tend to focus on the children in my community. I donate a variety of new and used items, and have made others aware of the need. Mostly I give my undivided attention, encouragement, belief, and lots of hugs.

Uh...

You'll make sure people are ok, and give rides to hitchers or STRANDED PEOPLE, but didn't give the guy who spoke spanish a jump when he even had his own cables?

Am I missing something here?

popeye1250 -> RE: A Whole Lotta Bitchin' Goin' On! (3/10/2007 11:36:38 AM)

That's funny about "Habitat for Humanity."
In the leftist enclave of Marin Country North of San Francisco where the average house goes for over $1 million, the citizens were protesting last week about Habitat for Humanity wanting to build some houses there for the poor.
Seems they "talk the talk" up there but alas, they don't "walk the walk."
And it's the same way on Cape Cod too.
Senator Ted "Cocktail" Kennedy doesn't even want windmills to generate "clean" electricity in Buzzard's Bay because it would "spoil his view."
What do you think he'd have to say about Habitat for Humanity if they announced that they wanted to build a few houses in Hyannis?
Limosine liberals.

puella I have an interesting observation for you.

1. The people who engage in the politics the least on this forum appear to be giving the most back in their respective communities.
2. The people who argue endlessly in the political threads don't appear to be giving anything back in their respective communities.

So now for the paradigm: Those who talk the most about change have the least amount of action. Those who talk the least about change appear to be affecting change through their actions.
