If there is one good thing about today's yuppy sort is that they love these houses too and are restoring them rather than buying a condo. Even though gentrification has its downside (like increasing property taxes in poor areas and more StarBucks being built), all in all it has been a good thing in maintaining a certain authenticity in many communities.

These homes are very valuable in Southern California... they start at half a million where my Daddy lives, and if you tag on an ocean view they go up steeply, like 750 or 800k. I want to get one when the property values tumble when GW leaves office and the next guy has to raise interest. The market is already really soft and foreclosures are rising. So perhaps I can get what I really want in a couple of years for half the price

trying to understand your question, FT. 

i did at one time volunteer for the 96 DNC convention when it was here in Chicago anad demonstrated in public against the "war" in Iraq with peace groups. this afternoon i was part of the march against gun violence.

I do quite a lot to give back. I started when my um's were small, with school, sports, scouts, church. Those were very busy years, and  I miss them sometimes.
I did a lot of things to teach the young ones about giving back. We always gave at Christmas to children from the angel tree, they would pick out who they wanted to give to, and shop for. It lead to lots of great conversations about giving. I work for an organization that educates children and families that are underprivledged. I could make a lot more money elsewhere, but, no one in social services is in it for the money. I feel I make a difference. sometimes, at least.
