If I had a buck for everytime some responded to me "but you are a crappy dom, just look at your name"...I would be rich.  I changed it for a couple of reasons but frankly, that certainly was one of them.

For lack of a better term, how did you claim your title?  By title, I mean any of the specific names that you use, meaning Master, Mistress, slave, etc.?

I made a conscious decision not to claim a title.  Why?  Here's how I responded to a similar question in a yahoo discussion group:

quote:

I'm Charles - Not Sir Charles or Lord Charles. I'm just Charles.
In fact, that's what the J. stands for in J. Charles.

I choose to be just Charles because, although I think "Sir" is more
endearing than "Honey", and I do want to be the dominant partner in
my relationships, I want it to be because my partner and I are both
comfortable relating to one another that way rather than being
because I want to be a "Dom" and she wants to be a "sub." I'm
hoping that being just Charles will serve to underscore this
perspective.

(Just) Charles

(My yahoo profile lists my name as "J. Charles." )

edited to explain "J. Charles."

And that’s exactly it! If you have an elaborate name then you will be expected to live up to it.
If I was to call myself ‘Sadistic Princess’ then subs would assume I wanted to do lots of painful things to them (and although Im sadistic Im very picky about who I inflict pain on!) and that I was a diva. They would be so disappointed lol
My partner has the most whimsical name on the scene and yet you couldn’t meet a more dominant man. Mistresses often get confused with his name and I have seen many a Domme try to dominate him. I find that just hysterical but it doesn’t bother him an iota because he’s extremely comfortable in what he is and doesn’t feel the need to portray himself as anything in particular.
I can understand why online only dominants like to have names that sound slightly formidable. A name does catch the eye and tells someone without question what this person is about.

Hehe, I just keep collecting them, kinda like souveniers from Disneyworld .

In all seriousness, while I understand the "title" thing to some degree,  I don't find one intersting enough to actually call myself that.  At best, the stereotype behind the title provides a point of common reference for conversation, if two people can actually agrre on what the title implies in the first place.   "Top" is about as close to a title as I can identify with, buts it also essentially meaningless, as its simply an indication of a role that anyone can do.  In hindsight, I genuinely wish I had chosen a different screen name,  as it seem pretty childish and lacking in imagination now.  So to myself, I'm simply Jeremy.

As for others calling me by a title, I'm "Ehh" on that.  I don't find it hugely uncomfortable to be called "Sir", I but dont paticularly like it either, and I've consented to them calling me that because they direly needed to call me something other than my first name.  "Master" is simply too much, as I end up with a severe desire to laugh any time I hear it, regardless of wether it was spoken in earnest or not.  Never been called "Daddy" in any way but obvious jest before.

When I finally actually manage to end up in a relationship, dunno what will happen.  But I doubt I will end up with sub who has a need to call me a title, because I'm attracted to argumentative, playful smartasses in the first place .  Ah, well.  I deal with it when the time comes I suspect

I have only one title that I have claimed for myself - "Suleiman the Spiffy". The other titles I answer to are laurels bestowed upon me by others - Husband, Master, Lover, Slave, Friend.
I think I cherish Friend most of all.

My title is Ms. And I earned it. I fell in love and in the tempestuous stupidity of youth, I got married and it was a poor match. I have since divorced, and Ms. is the title I earned in the process. Yep, I'm a divorcee.

Other titles? Well, they've called me The Arctic Bitch - that was given to me by a good friend in a chat room, and stuck. Her Frigid Bitchness was a play off of The Arctic Bitch which I have always been rather fond of.

But when it comes to kink, I describe myself as a domme and a sub, a rope slut and a knife slut, a sadist and many other things, but they are merely to attempt to convey from my heart to your head and/or heart what I like and do.

I do not allow anyone to call me Mistress unless they have gotten to know me, and then requested the privilege. Each submissive I have claimed as mine was asked to choose how he or she wanted to refer to me. So I have been Guide, Mistress, Ma'am, Goddess, m'Lady, and Duchess. But those were the titles given by my subs in our relationships.

The only titleI have her really use is "sir". The simple reason is that I believe that she should refer to me with respect if we are to live in this lifestyle. Upon earning my collar she can call me "master" because in excepting it she states that she accepts me as her master and has met the criteria I have set out for her.

I think titles are earned or at least that they should be. It's much like having to buy that first car for yourself. Being that you actually have to work to make the payments makes you appreciate it more. With all the things involved in this lifestyle that requires trust. You should wait until that person has earned it or atleast know them long enough to earn the chance to be trusted.

Claim my title?  MasterLordSirDomly?  Jeeeeeeeez.

That is the ghesyest thing since ghey came to gheytown.  The idea of according yourself some dumbass honorific title because your winkie gets hard/coochie gets wet based on being on one or both sides of a whip is so fucking stupid I can't believe it.  That's like being a level 21 Dork in some stupid LARP.  You're an epic level dork.

I got one fucking title: Marine, specifically a commissioned officer, Major, of US Marines.  That's a title.

LadyShitWick, MistressFapsALot and MasterWickedLonely aren't titles.  They're cries for help: "Save me from living my entire live/dying as a dumbass!!!"

LMAO!!!

Damn Major B.....

Good to see ya back. Been wondering when you'd show up to break up the party  ; }

In my defense sweet lady *looks around to see if anyone bought that* I was merely inquiring about the disposition of said Oreo not implying that I was an Oreo crusher.

Sweet lady??? Me??? omg...I'm speechless. You have a fever of some type don't you and are hallucinating.

Heeeey, you were attempting to distract me with Slurpage weren't you? Well it isn't working Oh SlurpiOne. Only a closeted Oreo crusher would even think of such a blasphepmous activity.

Ok, on the original idea.... Some got the concept of the idea, some did not.

On the beginning thought..... I was given the title of Lady Pact by others.   It wasn't because I was some kind of wanna be, with no real hand (either physical or electrocically) in the lifestyle.  On very rate occassions, I was nameed Mistrees (insert real name here _____) by others.  I take each claim rather literally.  No offense to anyone who has not had this priveledge.

Can anyone else give more insight on the actual question at hand?

Not sure about insight - however...
My thought is that certainly, you have been given the title by certain individuals.  However that does not make it that way to everyone.  Being a 'Lady' or a 'Master' in BDSM circles, isn't anything like an official 'title'.  It does not mean anything to anyone except those who chose to submit to that way of thinking.

So that being said - if I met you at an event, I would in no way wish to address you as 'Lady' (no offense intended) - simply as who you are.  It is not meant as a disrespect, or even being awkward.  You are just not the person to whom I would submit such a title on first meeting.  I prefere people first, rather than titles and honourifics.

Question is - how does that make one feel?  Would you ignore me, simply because I didn't title you?  Would that make me less of a person in your (generic) eyes?  I know I certainly wouldn't associate with people to whom forcing their ideas upon me or anyone else.  With me, you have two choices.  .dark. or my real name.  Either way it's not a title or a label - just a name.  Whether I am submissive or not holds no meaning unless our relationship took another step.

Peace and Rapture
