Racial Slurs on the CM Boards - 11/15/2007 3:57:57 AM

There's a disturbing (to me) post on a thread here that repeatedly uses racial slurs including the "n word".  Other slurs against other minorities are also used.  Does such language violate the CM TOS (thinking of the prohibition against harrassing speech)?  Do the mods ever remove such posts or close threads because of them?

Is this a matter of free speech?  Personally i find absolutely no excuse for such language and wish it were subject to moderation.

What do Y/you think?

I think there is a vast difference between discussing a word, in the context of a news item, such as the thread about dog the bounty hunter, and aiming the word at an individual. One is acceptable the other isnt.

i'd find it difficult to read a racial slur that described me, and language ascribing all sorts of negativity to my group's collective behavior, and not take it personally.

The post that  made me think of this is not on any thread about Dog the Bounty Hunter.  i would rather not give directions to the post so as not to single out any one member.

I think this is 100% correct, I used the word in My post a few times yesterday, basicly to debunk some asshats that thinks its ok to use it.  I know that may sound odd, but if you read My post, you would understand.  Nothing gets under My skin more than a racist, they are a special kind of stupid.

I think people should live and speak in accordance with their own ethics and value systems.

We're all free to skip over something if we don't like the tone or the language or the topic.

There is a "report" button fuction on every post, it maybe more productive to make the moderators aware of this situation than it is to start a thread about a post none of us have or will see...

The "report" button is in the lower right hand corner of every post.

Then you haven't given enough information for anyone to respond in a useful manner.

i don't think reading the specific post aids in the discussion.  The question is more general:  should members be permitted to use racial slurs in posting here or should they be moderated for it?

i can think of possiblities where the slur itself is under discussion and thus no stones cast, but apart from that i have a hard time understanding why what seems to me to be hate speech is apparently freely allowed.

So i guess i re-ask the Op question:  is this a matter of free speech or a violation of the CM TOS?

Well, you're a lawyer.....there is a balance between sections 3, 7, and 11 of the TOS and individual forum guidelines.  there is the matter of intent and whether or not the discussion brings more light than heat.

Racial slurring (and slurring because of drinks) is a fact in real life, as are many other things.

No, for me, it is far to early to take a wait and see attitude on this subject.

As far as I know, there is nothing in the TOS about posts that 'seems to you to be hate speech'.  Probably because everyone's opinion on where that line lies may differ.

On a case by case basis, the moderation of usage of the 'N' word here has seemed to depend on the Mods tolerance for that particular poster. Freedom of speech on a privately owned message board is not an absolute.

I would think that racial slurs that were insulting would fall outside of the TOS. Most racial slurs are insulting

I believe we can moderate ourselves.  Language that we don't like will get used, if you feel strongly about it reply stating your offence.  If the KKK or Nazis or homophobes take over this site's forums then we can worry about getting nitpicky with the TOS, until then I'd really prefer if we worked it out amongst ourselves.

I believe in both equal rights and freedom of expression.  I will stand up to defend those I truly feel are being persecuted, I'm just don't believe that every insult is persecution.

Was it the "Blacks make half the money that whites do"thread?

There were some pretty ugly, bigoted things said there.Probably by stupid people trying to be funny, but just were assholes being themselves.

A good bunch of the posts were filled w/ myths and stereotypes, and added nothing.

As far as I can tell, the Mods do keep things civil and keep name calling off the boards.

I`ve seen threads pulled b/c racial slurs were used.

Ugly, bigoted, prejudicial, racist, and downright fucking dumb.   No namecalling tho.  But I have to ask, if it is don't ask, don't tell and it seeths beneath the surface, how does that advance the cause?  If we can't talk about it, as heated and heartless as these things may be.......it doesn't change.

Yup and if they moderate all the posts that have the "N" word, I expect every post that contains the "WT" words to be moderated as well.  It doesn't just work in one direction, ya know............luci

Frankly, I think anyone who persecutes "white" skinned people for using the term nigger...is being a Nigger.  Capital N.  As Dog Chapman clearly explained the term describes quality of lifestyle choices and other adult chosen behaviors, and is not a term of mere skin tone reference.

I think this might be what the OP referred to. It appeared yesterday on two threads as part of a much much longer diatribe. To claim that someone who disagrees with you abusing them is a "N****r" is quite offensive in my opinion.

With some posts, particularly those that immediately reek of derangement on the part of the author, (see above) I usually think they are best ignored to allow the discussion to continue.

However, if a black poster were to racially offend white or Asian readers, I would call them on it because it might more effectively challenge the prejudice that way. I have yet to see such a post, though.

I may be wrong but looking at other sites, this issue doesn't seem to be such a problem -- it might account for some of CM's credibility issues.

WT = White Trash.

Now, trailer trash is probably acceptable.  The moral is, that it's ok to insult someone or a group of people (i.e. those who live in trailers) so long as you're not insulting someone with specific constitutional housing protection.

Seriously, moderation exists to promote healthy debates and conversations.  Tempers flare, and people say things and make threats on a message board that they wouldn't in public (be it from fear of being kicked out of the bar, or having their face bashed in.)  The culture here on collarchat seems to permit irony and veiled intellectual insults, and prohibits prolonged baiting and attacks of any kind.  It isn't the word, but rather how that word is used.  Thus, I can say someone is being a whiney pathetic moron on this thread, but I can't say "Ron, you're a pathetic long haired hippie type pinko fag who voted for George McGovern for president."

Mr. Manners

And you can't for several reasons, look at my photo, no long hair possible, and I didn't vote for McGovern............nevertheless; a grain of truth, and it wounds me deeply.
