Fad diets generally will help a person lose some, and sometimes even enough for one to reach his goal, but that is generally a part of that roller coaster ride, and with fad diets, your body starves for certain nutritional elements which can later pose daily problems (i.e. arthritis or it's cousin, gout, and other problems).

Reprogramming your behavioral eating habits in order to develop more nutritional eating can get one to his optimum weight goal and keep him there without ever having to get on another roller coaster.

ohh i agree, but im not looking for a sugary cereal
i have many other healthy breakfast choices that i often eat
cottage cheese + fruit
omelet
hot cerel (oat bran, cream of wheat etc)
yougart
etc

but i crave cereal once and a while and want a full bowl of lowcarb carby goodness!!
(ps im a vegetarian by the way so as much as a porc chop would be great protien and low carbs, its just not my style. it and also means a lot of my diet already consits of fruit and veges, so to me a bowl of cereal is mixing things up!! it would much nicer having a suggestion than a lecture.)

Correct me if I'm wrong...but generally grain, flour + sugar = high carbs.  THAT would be why the AMA has done Americans such a disservice by saying have a bowl of good cereal, a piece of toast (dry) and a glass of OJ for breakfast!  I think they've finally conceded a cheese omelet and vegetable juice would be MUCH better.  Or, how ‘bout a porkchop smothered in onions and some fresh-frozen blueberries on the side?  Heaven!!!

The cardiologists (especially the ones who publish books), are finally convincing the AMA that fat is not evil, that protein and MODERATE carbs are the way to stay healthy.  A bowl of cereal is likely high enough in carbs to max ya out for the day.  I’d rather get my carbs from salads and vegetables and a bit of fruit.

im curious why you consider it a fad diet when we are educating ourselves on what we are eating?
how many people do you know even know what their food provides them or even reads the side of a box?

Leonardo,

Yes, that would be why following a good protein, moderate fat and low carb plan for a few weeks makes sense; get into ketosis, drop some FAT and slowly add good carbs back in.  Atkins’ plan is hardly a fad at some 30 years old now…and the longer it is around the more studies prove it is a good, healthful program.  South Beach is quite similar…I’m sure there are others…though my understanding is that the Zone has some misconceptions regarding ketosis.

While what you say is very important; we are not discussing fad diets.

I can't believe I have missed this entire thread!  Where have I been the last couple of weeks?  (I know where, eating far too many carbs, and using the holidays as an excuse!)...

As someone that's been eating low carb for 6 months now- and lost a lot of weight, gotten my blood glucose levels back to normal with no medications AND done a ton of reading and research- I can honestly say that this is something I believe in.  It's far from an unhealthy 'fad' diet- and my blood test lab results prove it (not to mention how much healthier I feel when I stick with it!).

As somebody who loves to cook and bake (and eat!)- it was quite a challenge at first.  But, with some experimenting, and tweaking recipes- I have become something of a low carb cooking enthusiast.  My pantry looks a bit like a science experiment in the making- especially with alternative sweeteners and low carb and low GI flour alternatives- but it's been a fun and rewarding journey.

I encourage anyone that wants to give this way of eating a try to stick with it a while.   I'll happily lend support to anyone- and I have recipes and links I can share here or on the other side if anyone is interested!

Happy New Year,,,

sNs

lauren, read through this thread...there are a ton of links, including one that links to a whole page of 'low carb' discussions right here on Collarme.

I'm doing Atkins' plan, South Beach is quite similar...both actually TEACH you how to eat.  Their plans are life-long, healthful, luxurious ways to eat...while loosing weight easily (in the induction phase) and never feeling hungry!

PS... Why is it some people say "e-mail me" instead of just putting it here in the discussion?  Heck, if it's relevant (and right), why not share?    It’s kind of like saying ‘e-mail me if you want your body-mass index’ when there are free BMI calculators all over the internet!  <shakes head>

awwwwwwwwwwwww... way to go, sweet!!!

I've just started a week ago today, but on Friday I'd already lost five pounds (I don't have a scale at home).  I feel better than I have in months and months, though I did feel kind of punk and had a headache around days 4-5; but that was it.  I will loose some weight over the next month or so...and then begin re-learning how to eat.  Heck, I like to cook too...but NOW I'm going to think more about what it is I AM eating (when there is so MUCH to choose from!)

Today, after a breakfast omelet with cheese and a big ol green salad w/tuna fish for lunch...I'm hardly going to feel hungry!  In many ways I'm eating more than I did a month ago; but wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy mo betta!  Apparently that isn't unusual.

I'm reading and following Atkins, but I also got the South Beach Diet (very similar) and ordered The Paleo Diet from my library.  That just sounded so interesting!  (There are several-many links earlier in this thread)

Please feel free to share ideas, links, books, recipes and experiences!  For example...know a good cereal for the poster above???

Beverly

BTW...watch the cereals on Netrition.  Some taste great- but many use questionable sugar alcohols like maltitol- which has a lower glycemic index than sugar; but is still not tolerated by some people (myself included).  They tend to deduct it from the overall carb count- making it seem like a low carb alternative, when in fact- it does not always work that way in the body.   Not only do some sugar alcohols cause gastric distress, they can elevate blood glucose levels in some people and have been known to cause weight loss stalls, too.  So, just keep an eye on the ingredients, and see how they effect you individually if you purchase such a cereal.  I have read about, but not tried, a cereal that's made of hulless barley called "Whole Control"; higher in carb than I'm willing to go at the moment, but does sound promising...

Well, I imagine you have a harder row to hoe than I do, bebe; I get to have all the stuff you mentioned...and pork chops!  LOL   Still, I'm still at the stage where a bowl of cereal or a sandwich (the bread) would set me back bigtime!!!

One thing I've discovered:  Miso Soup!   I even had it for breakfast the other day.  I had a teaspoon of Miso paste (or soy bean paste) in a mug of hot water; I added a spoonful of chopped jalapeño pepper & green onion (I've decided when I chop, I'm gonna do extra and keep it to top omelets and stuff) and then cubed in a nice slice of silky tofu.  Man…what a treat!

Thanks for your input,
Beverly

Hi bebe...my UM is a vegetarian- and trying to find one meal we can both share that's low carb and meatless can be a bit daunting at times!  Once in a while I manage, but mostly, while we both me eat some elements of the same meal- it's very unusual for our plates to have the same exact things on them.  If you can handle maltitol, there is a GREAT granola sold on Netrition from a company called Flax-Z-Snax.  It's pricey- but, this stuff is sweet, crunchy, high in fiber and delicious- just that my system can't handle it.  If you don't count the sugar alcohols, it has only 1-2 net carbs per serving (which gets pushed up to 7 or 8 when you do add them in), but the people that can more easily digest maltitol give it rave reviews.

Tobasco’s newest sauce; Chipotle, is awesome; not nearly as vinegary or as hot as some others!  It’s the one in the brown box; GREAT on eggs, steaks, chops…and …um…tomato juice.  (Ah hem)

I just love the stuff!

Okay...MY BAD!  lauren had it right (I didn't): there IS a web called Netrition !! www.netrition.com  I would double check 'The Zone' stuff though, I've heard their diet assums some wrong information regarding what is ketosis and how it works.  Seems to me if this is true, their products could negate success.  ...perhaps

ohh yeah
im all about the soups
my favorite is pumpkin ann turnip but a lot more effort than miso (though miso is amazing taste wise too)
medetrian soups are good too (olives, chickpeas, artichoke, etc)

like sweetNsmart, i LOVE cooking (and even baking)
i have lost 25 lbs so far, all i did was research what would best for me and my lifestyle
and started journalling what i eat (i made my own excel spreadsheet so i could personally customize it)

Pumpkin and turnip?  Sooooooooo… perhaps you are not using a low-carb diet, then?  Not to say it is the ‘One Twue Way’…just curious.

Congrats on your weight loss… I intend to match it!

Funny, I am working on my own spreadsheet, too!  I want to be able to quickly know substitutions!  I wanted a list of foods and measurements that equaled the same number of carbs…stuff like that.  I’ve found several good sources (but of course none is all encompassing!)

Bearlee - I am sold on low carb. It is good for me and it works. I also want to address my emotional eating issues - which are a separate thing:)

free range animals grow slower so farmers have to keep them longer than grain fed ones which raises prices, quite often its tougher and tastes more like wild meat, its tougher because its older the beef I raised this way I always had to add oil to cook it

I believe what Leonardo ment was you have to change your eating habits so you dont crave the bad stuff anymore we dont buy much that isnt whole wheat. I havent had salt in the house in years, only cook with olive oil eat mostly chicken and turkey, our snackes mostly consist of fruit, except we do buy ice cream, we dont drink much juice or milk, we drink water, people will disagree but we believe mlk isnt really good for you, if you were to feed processed milk to a calf in would die, humans have become accustumed to drinking cow milk but its not really natural for us to drink it its only healthy because of what they add to it, just an examply of changing eating habits,

the USDA only is there to keep us from starving to be healthy we need far more vitamins and minerals than they recomend

lauren i suggest journalling your food intake and your emotions at the time of eating
will help you see trends and patterns

and ms bearlee i eat no more than 120g of carbs a day, 30% of 1600 calories so yes it is low carb
just cause a soup has carbs in it doesnt mean im not doing a low carb diet, you jump to conclusions so quickly
one food choice doesnt resemble a whole "diet"
i just find it very filling and full of fibre so i weight out my carb choices, plus they have more protien than most other vege soups (no matter what i choose to eat msbear it will have carbs because i am a vegetarian!!!!)

Pumpkin and turnip are amongst the lower carb vegetables ( I eat both in moderation) - and pack a decent nutritional 'punch' for the carb cost:

Note that different forms of pumpkin have different carb counts. It is FRESH pumpkin that has the lowest carb values. Here are some carb counts for you to consider. All are in 1/2 cup amounts:

Pumpkin Item
Carbs
Fiber
Eff Carbs

Pumpkin flower
0.5
0.5
0

Pumpkin flower, boiled drained
2.2
0.6
1.6

Pumpkin leaf, raw
0.5
0.5
0

Pumpkin, boiled drained mashed
6
1
5

Pumpkin, canned
9.9
3.4
6.5

Pumpkin, fresh pulp
3.8
1
2.8

Turnips (which are great boiled and mashed- make a nice mashed potato alternative, as do cauliflower and parsnips):

Turnips
  • 1 cup raw chopped (130 grams) - 6 grams of carbohydrate plus 2 grams fiber
  • 1 cup boiled and mashed (230 grams) - 7 grams carb, 5 grams fiber
