Breitbart confirms he was duped by O'Keefe and the ACORN pimp hoax

http://mediamatters.org/columns/201003020001

quote:

It turns out that Andrew Breitbart didn't actually know what was on the ACORN tapes when he helped launch them on his website last year, and used the videos to fuel his oddly personal crusade against the low-income advocacy organization. That's right -- Breitbart didn't know what was on the tapes. Take a few seconds to let the implications of that confession sink in, and what it means to Breitbart's already dented credibility. Recall that for months Breitbart personally vouched for the ACORN videos, braying loudly that they could not be ignored and that they represented the unvarnished truth. Breitbart claimed he had told "the truth" every step of the way about the controversial ACORN clips and bragged that "[t]hroughout the ACORN story I applied my conscience to the material." But now it turns out that Breitbart was fooled by the ACORN pimp hoax and mistakenly assumed, after watching deceptively edited clips from his protégé James O'Keefe, that O'Keefe strolled into ACORN offices wearing the outlandish pimp outfit.

I fully expect this story to deepen as the bullshit this kid has spewed starts piling up around him....

Yep, it was in Salon last week, but I figured it wouldn't be believed.

This jackass will be a pariah by the time this is over... as he should be

DomImus -> RE: Just as I Thought: Acorn Pimp Story=Hoax (3/6/2010 10:05:40 PM)

No hoax. You just can't read or didn't read the whole article. From your own link: (near the bottom of the story)

"It's true, as I've stated many times, that the costume question does not negate what was captured on the ACORN videos."

Was the O'Keefe video misleading about what he was wearing in the ACORN offices? Yep.

Did the ACORN staffers still say what they said? Yep.

Guilty. Next case, bailiff.

Yeah I noticed that too, and I have to agree with your point for the present. But there may be more to come, given the credibility gap that just opened up. Also from the story, O'Keefe...

has been laboring to explain why he never sought a single correction last year when an avalanche of news outlets erroneously reported O'Keefe was dressed as a pimp inside ACORN offices. And he's been struggling to explain why, in light of the pimp hoax, he refuses to release all of the unedited ACORN tapes so we can see what other discrepancies might pop up.

Nothing very confidence building there. I'd say stay tuned.

K.

DomKen -> RE: Just as I Thought: Acorn Pimp Story=Hoax (3/6/2010 10:34:30 PM)

I think the telling thing is that O'Keefe claimed to be pretending to be a pimp looking to evade taces and hide underage girls when in fact he often dressed conservatively and presented himself as a law student trying to get his girlfriend away from her abusive pimp. He had to deceptively edit the taopes to make things look bad when it is arguable that teh ACORN staffers were simply being good samaritans. I expect that a lot of the ACORN bashers will pretend none of this has come to light and continue to bash an organization that did a lot of good very quietly for many years.

DomImus -> RE: Just as I Thought: Acorn Pimp Story=Hoax (3/6/2010 10:42:58 PM)

I suspect that all of those dead people that ACORN registered to vote will miss them. Who will be their advocate in 2012?

PenOnBeadedChain -> RE: Just as I Thought: Acorn Pimp Story=Hoax (3/6/2010 10:49:36 PM)

Not to mention that the judge threw out the conservative activist's video as a heavily-edited sham. The ACORN workers were exonerated. (Not sure if this is the same story linked to as the focus seems shifted.)

ACORN's only crime was helping African-Americans - who tend to vote Democratic. The latent Klan faction of the GOP hates them for the former, and the movement conservatives hate them for the latter. The common thread there is, well, hate.

Assuming you think promoting the entitlement mentality is "doing good."

I'm not aware that they did much work on behalf of republicans.

Please present one substantiated case.

Assuming you think promoting the entitlement mentality is "doing good."

Helping defend poor people from slum landlords is "promoting the entitlement mentality?"
Getting children who live in old buildings lead screenings is "promoting the entitlement mentality?"
Registering people to vote is "promoting the entitlement mentality?"
Advocating for brown site cleanup is "promoting the entitlement mentality?"

I think you have a very skewed idea of what ACORN actually does.

And I think you have a pollyanna-ish view of them.  Their worldview, their idea of "helping" is based on getting people onto the government dole, be that for poverty maintenance, free education, or a mortgage without a job.

Teaching people to game the system isn't something I see as being noble work.  Others, I'm sure, will disagree.

NeedToUseYou -> RE: Just as I Thought: Acorn Pimp Story=Hoax (3/7/2010 12:01:05 AM)

Anybody have a link to the unedited footage?

Seems simple enough to set the record straight simply post the unedited video on youtube, it wouldn't even cost anything, until that happens, I still only have the portions released of the acorn employees giving advice for prostitution.

If it is out there, please give the link I'd like to see it.

Maybe if you'd explain why you have that view of them, we could agree or disagree.

If you read the link or watched the video you might have noticed that is one of the issues.

Both Breitbart and O'Keefe refuse to release the full tapes.

I didn't realize that you were discussing Wal-Mart here... They provide training classes teaching their employees how to apply for government benefits and Medicaid.

In other words you are quite willing to rush to  judgement and presume quilt based on the edited versions now available....portions released by parties with a demonstrable political bias?Does that about sum up your position? You are comfortable with this position? I got to tell you,for myself,if the shoe was on the other foot.....I would never admit to such a POV,on pain of death I would hold fast to the position that everyone gets a fair break....but you must be a better man than me....you are willing to admit and stand up and be counted......as a complete and utter idiot!

Wait a minute.  How much of the taxpayers money was spent on bailing out the banking industry, insurance industry, auto-makers?  Isn't that also "government dole"?   Why is it okay to teach people the art of high-frequency trading and taking advantage of other SEC loopholes so that money is made out of thin air in a legal ponzi scheme that is the new Wall Street?

But you are against people getting free education or a mortgage?

You think that registering the working poor is a bad thing?

Yeah, people with a sense of entitlement suck... especially those that feel they are entitled to all the representation but fuck everyone else
