ORIGINAL: ThatDamnedPanda Life's often unfair. Cry me a river. LOL, Panda. Funny how you would choose to make this an argument, given the rest of the post. [;)] Yeah. A box in the middle of the road, here. I'm glad you made it. Yet somehow you chose a path other than the one ACORN or a similar agency would have guided you to. Why didn't you just get the Social Security disability checks started, put your name on the Section 8 waiting list, get some family member signed up to be your in-home care provider (and into the union, of course), and make sure Medicare bought you that powerchair? Thanks, Rich. Appreciated. The simple truth is, I wasn't willing to settle for that kind of a life. An avenue such as that is simply not an option for me, nor would it ever be. I won't live like that. But I challenge your assertion that this is the path down which ACORN or "a similar agency" would have steered me. That's a misconception and a misrepresentation of what community-based non-profits do. I know, because before i got sick i spent most of my adult life working for such organizations. The role of most community non-profits is to steer people toward resources with which they can rebuild productive lives for themselves - employment agencies, community development programs, educational opportunities, etc. I don't know where you get your information that ACORN and community non-profits typically teach people how to leech off the system, but whoever told you that is ignorant. If I were you, I wouldn't listen to them anymore. They're preventing you from gaining a functional understanding of the world in which you live. quote:
ORIGINAL: TheHeretic Welfare has become a multi-generational culture. ACORN, and many of their former affiliates maintain and promote that culture. I'm not okay with that. They also suck up grant money that could be going to agencies focused on moving people closer to self-sufficiency, instead of away from it. How do they do that? They are an agency focused on moving people closer to self-sufficiency. I guess I'm not sure how you see them as sucking up grant money that could be going to other agencies.
