ORIGINAL: TheHeretic My opinion, as stated God knows how many times, is that it is right and proper for a nation such as ours to have a safety net, but that it should not be allowed to become a comfy hammock. It is perspective. People on the thread speak of ACORN taking on "slumlords," and expect their phrasing to set the definition. Dragging out the eviction of a tenant who has trashed the property and fails to pay the rent on time gets described a bit differently by me. So are you saying there's no such thing as a slumlord? Are you saying that because many rental property owners are decent, hardworking people who are treated badly by tenants and are justified in throwing them out, there are no property owners who take unfair advantage of their tenants? Are you saying that because some tenants are bad tenants, they all are? Maybe when some of us are talking about "slumlords," we're talking about different people than the honest landlords you're talking about. Maybe if you think that "slumlord" is just a code for "every landlord," that says more about your perception than it does about what the people you're arguing against are actually saying. This is why I asked you for specific examples of what you were talking about. This black and white, all or nothing broadbrushing to which you often resort makes it difficult to keep track of exactly what your point is on any given issue, because it's difficult to find the logic in it. quote:
ORIGINAL: TheHeretic Free education sounds so wonderful, who could be opposed? How about the student who is going to complete a degree program with $200,000 in debt, and finish with the same degree as someone who sits next to them and got a ride on the taxpayer back? Life's often unfair. Cry me a river. quote:
ORIGINAL: TheHeretic Have you ever actually been poor, Panda? Busted your ass, working overtime every day because you don't eat without getting 10 hours of crap-and-a-half onto the paycheck? Gone looking for a roof with the means you have, and discovered that welfare programs pay more to house the unemployable than you can afford? Do you understand how the system actually discourages youth from breaking the cycle? Ever worked your way up into living in a decent little neighborhood, only to see it become a ghetto because of an influx of subsidized housing? Or are those things blocked by the blinders of liberal guilt? If you consider being homeless and living in a 1983 Chrysler Newport, with everything I own in the world stored in the trunk of the car, to be poor, then I guess the answer would be "yes." Declaring bankruptcy and losing everything I own because I was sick for so many years and lost my insurance, and not really caring that much because I was so sick I didn't expect to live much longer anyway? Is that what you're talking about? Sure, I've been there. Working shit jobs for a few bucks an hour and looking forward all month to the last Saturday of the month because that's the one day that - if all my bills are caught up - I can afford to treat myself to a 15-dollar deep dish pizza - yeah, I've been poor. Yeah, I've been there, and I got lucky and got my health back. A lot of it, anyway. I still don't know how, but I did, and as I got my health back i worked like a fucking dog to rebuild my life and put myself into a position where, even if I don't live long enough to die of old age, I'll still have a satisfying and relatively healthy life. Yes. I've been poor. So what? What's your point? Yeah, Rich, I get it - fuck poor people. You got yours, fuck them. I get it, I hear you, I've been hearing it from you for years. Yeah, Rich, I've been there, and since you seem to think it's useful to measure dicks, I've probably been a hell of a lot worse off than you've ever been. And I don't begrudge the poor one fucking thing. Are a lot of them lazy? Yeah. Are some of the organizations that help them corrupt? Yeah. I don't give a fuck. Because a starving, homeless child is still a starving homeless child. You want to hate them because you're scared they want something of yours, go ahead and hate away. Live the hate, Rich. Feel the hate. Be the hate. Be the fear. Live your life that way. Whatever makes you feel good about yourself, i guess. I'd still rather live with my choice than yours.
