Status: offline 		We shall see.  I'm debating riding it out (because I actually LOVE the work in my group) or changing departments.  She's been at the company 3 years and recently inherited our team.  A few people from her old team transferred out because of her style.

Right now I'm hanging in there and biting my tongue.  And calling in sick this week. LOL.

Drink some syrup of ipecac and go in so you can puke all over her and then you can tell her how you did not want to let her down by calling in sick... then take three days off (make sure you do this in the morning so you can get the most out of your day off)

Status: offline 		Sorry, but i work in the restaurant business, and we're not supposed to call in sick unless we're actually dying. During service one night, i spilled 500 degree oil down all along my left hand and arm. It left a blister that was the size of my palm and 1 inch high, and i still couldn't leave until service was over. i've seen people sprain their ankle or cut themselves badly, and still have to finish service. i've seen people throw up, and go right back to work. i don't mean to gross you out. Those are extreme cases, and the people working in restaurants are healthy most of the time. However, it's an extreme profession that requires extreme measures.

Sorry if i sound smug. i'm pretty sure your boss will let you take the day off if you're really sick. But, i can understand her frustration if people are calling in sick all the time. It can be annoying.

gungadin - I spent years in the restaurant business.  Years.  A second degree burn on my hand caused me to be escorted out and off to the docs.  They frowned on calling in sick because so many employees abused it.  But an injury was an injury.  You had a workers comp claim there.  I hope you followed up.  And you didn't sound smug at all - just a completely different environment, but in my years in food service, I've never ever experienced people getting injured and vomiting and going back to work.

Heretic - I think people are just having fun.  It's late, the situation is silly, so we're goofing off.

My university was nearly ground zero for swine flu... it went through the dorms. This was when the epidemic first started. I had to go to class with people who were specifically told to stay at home if they had any cold/flu symptoms.... well many went to class anyways and exposed the school population to their cooties...

I had the chicken pox when I was 30 and my boss wanted me to work with the public anyways... I refused. Why? because there are a lot of people with immunity issues in this country that getting any sort of virus can kill them... in my estimation it is just plain ass wrong to risk the health of others because of some sense of fucked up work ethic. Guess what, no one is so indispensable that they can't get sick... no one.

In my opinion bosses that demand employees work when ill should be fined by the CDC. This is a real and emergent problem because we are going to have something like the Spanish flu hit and those "work ethic" assholes are going to be partly to blame for a pandemic

Don't assume. I started work at 7AM this morning, clocked out at 6PM, and am about to go back in and take care of some stuff that can't wait til morning. I will be back in at 7AM tomorrow and do it all over again. I worked every day of Memorial Day weekend (after a full week), because there are things that don't get done if I don't do them. I get no holiday pay, no sick days, no vacation, no personal days because my boss doesn't feel like giving them.

I once worked a full day (on my feet all day, no wussy crutches or anything) when I had torn all the ligaments in my left ankle loose in a dislocation/relocation accident the night before.
Does that count?

Status: offline 		the policy where I work is that you get two sick days a year. after that you have to use your vacation and reward days and you cannot call in sick on a friday or you will be written up...unless you have a dr's excuse.

most days I feel like I'm back in grade school where I work. sigh. I soooooo need a new job! Grumblegrumble.

Status: offline 		Most places only put in the crappy policy because they are being abused. It doesnt matter if  its just one person ...it has to be across the board or they can get sued.

I love my current job, if your sick your sick, stay home and dont infect us...

(unless your my shift... then the hazmat suit is in the closet )
