No Moon stop that.

Your tying to interject facts and reason,  Sanity doesn't like those.

You could take that story a lot more seriously if you didn't know how many times they'd changed their story for why they were running protection rackets in Belfast over the last forty years.

So they have no interest in the bank district.  none.

Maybe, but I've always found the u turn* on the part of the American right over Hussein's right to govern hilarious. They were all for him when Reagan was loading him down with WMDs to use against those rotters in Iran who'd deposed the Shah after all that trouble the CIA had taken to get rid of that evil lefty Mossadeq and reinstate him back in the '50s.
Besides, if it took a soiopathic autocrat to hold Iraq together (which it increasingly looks like it did) then removing him from power and replacing him with a quisling shi'te government who are going to sell out to Iran thirty seconds after your troops leave the country was a bit irresponsible.
I wonder how America would respond now if Kuwait was to start drilling slantwise across the border?

*(Limey for "flip flopping")

No, they don't. A few have suggested that they don't even want the British out of Northern Ireland either, as that means they'd have to stop extorting money from their countrymen and receiving handouts from some stupid cunt in Boston who's dragged a barely understood grudge across the Atlantic.
Without all of the bickering between the republicans and the loyalists, the idiots would all have to get proper jobs and stop taking Yeats and Pearse's names in vain. I doubt any of the Michael Collins wannabes would much fancy that.

So- that means London is safe.

But NI is a mess.

I tend to think they will start up again.   (The IRA)

The only reason this stopped was because international opinion had finally turned against them, seemed to coincide with the timing of 911....strange that.

As long as we're occupying Ulster, of course they will. There's always a more radical provo group who feel that SinnFeinn has sold out the Fenian cause lurking in the wind. The fuckers weren't whining about bankers when they blew up a load of innocents in Omagh, where they?

Not quite: Colin Powell was still attending NORAID fundraisers until he was asked to leave Bush's cabinet, and Gerry Adams was still getting wined and dined in the White House every Saint paddy's day this century until that poor sod got kicked to death in a pub by a bunch of off duty provos in (I think) 2006. After that, the penny finally dropped that maybe there was a bit of a contradiction between the war on terror and supporting Adams. I can't swear to the date, but NORAID hasn't been banned for nine years, put it that way.

Ireland, the grass is always greener, it rains a lot there, quaint cottages, guinness, leprachauns and quaint coutryside, ceilidhs, ancient history, all the positives that attract the tourist, but what the tourist sees and understands is sometimes very different from the reality of life of those who live there.

yeah but thats in any country the case. It takes a fair amount of time to live in another country to actually understand what it means to live there, as a holiday doesn't explain what live is like when you live within that country, it only gives an impression...which can be very wrong at times.

My point in the original thread which boi found so dramatic she had to post it a third time, was that muslim terrorists are not the only ones OUT THERE

I wouldn't say that I found it particularly dramatic, but I did think it deserved it's own space. The muslim terrorists seem to get all the thread time and it seemed unfair not to give the IRA some time too. After all terrorism is wrong, not matter what color the guy with the bomb is.

Why arent they pulling stunts like this in the US?

It seems to me - that it would be a logical target.

Just thought that I'd add that the press represents this as a religious thing between Catholics and Protestants but it's actually a cultural-economic split, and religion is only one aspect.

Yep. Religion is the main excuse for that though, sadly.
I am quite surprised how little a lot of the Americans on here seem to know about the troubles when it was people in their country who spent thirty odd years bankrolling the Republicans through NORAID...

I believe the US attitude to the Northern Ireland troubles was largely due to misplaced notions of ancestry, as if where their ancestors came from was the promised land that they themselves might like to migrate back to at some point, so they will fight as they believe their ancestors fought to free a land from the perceived tyranny of a foreign power by sending wealth generated in the new lands.

I believe there is some similarity there with the American Jews and the troubles in and around Israel.

So perhaps it has to be asked, what is America, a new land ,made up of those that turned their back on trouble to seek a better future, or is America in reality only a transitory country to be used for the short term until the ideals have been created in the country that is the choice for support.

But whilst foreigners aid fighters in other countries, it is just a pity they did not see the actions of their adopted country, for imperialism is not a totally British thing.

Do you or moony ever make a post without turning it into a stab at the US?

The only real difference with the IRA and Loyalists is that you end up with the same amount of arseholes after the incident as there was before it

edit: fixed iT!

Umm-  except for that the US is imperialist.  (too)

For us it would be, not for them. You guys luuuurve Ireland the way Michael jackson used to luuuurve, young boys. Who'll send them money if they start bombing you?
(If memory serves, a few people were observing that if Reagan felt justified in bombing Tripoli, then Thatcher would have had fair cause to nuke Boston. Of course, the "independant deterrant" wouldn't have worked for that...)

When you people stop fucking around in other countries' business and funding terrorist organisations, I'll shut up about it, okay?

But Moon, I *agree with you there* old bean but look at all the lefties who *want* us involved in the *problems* of countries like The Sudan, Bangladesh (whenever it floods), Haiti, Cuba, Somalia and a host of other third and fourth world countries.
"Stop fucking around in other countrie's business" means "everyone" does it not?
We shouldn't be the "world's policeman" but we shouldn't be the "world's rescue service", "world's banker" or "world's ultimate destination for asylum seekers and refugees" either. The left seems to want to have it's cake and eat it too! "We won't shoot you, here's a thousand dollars of someone else's money instead."
The U.S. is incapable "politically" of even defending our own border with that pos country Mexico and that's going to be a huge reason why President Obama will be sent packing in 2012.
Of course people like him want to be everyone's "friend" because they seem to have a deep-seated psychological need to be "liked."
Prostitution and "foreign aid" are very much alike! A prostitute will "like" you as long as the money keeps flowing! Don't take my word for it, try it for yourself. When the $money$ stops she'll just walk out the door! You don't even have to say anything!
