HannahLynHeather -> we got the fucking boot!! (7/31/2011 9:12:39 AM)

i'm in a right fucking pissy mood!!

so last night the fucking landlord tells me that he's kicking us out. not for any problems, its just his wife is in long term care and he finds the house too big and too much work for just him, so he's moving into our little apartment.

fuck!! i mean its not like this place is a fabuloso apartment, it's not, just a dicky 1-bedroom, but its plenty good enough. it's the location, the location is just fucking perfect. we're in town, a 4 minute walk to a major road with a cross-town bus that runs every 10 or 15 minutes 21 hours a day. 10 minutes from a big mall and a major movieplex, but you'd never fucking know it. it feels like fucking cottage country here. we're on a little road that goes nowhere on a bit of land that sticks out into the river with woods on either side and a park in the middle <see attached sketch map>. and it only cost $300++ a month for fuck's sake!

anyway, it was a sweet spot, but its gone come september. life fucking sucks sometimes.

now, just so this isn't just a rant, i'll sneak in a semi fucking related question. [;)][;)]

have any of you had a place that was just perfect for one reason or another, but you just couldn't keep it or stay?

Can you and your two friends move into the big part of his house and split that rent 4 ways? Sounds like that would be a win for all......?

To be fair, that is something of a default for you.

However, this time, you appear to have a genuine reason to feel so. Being forced to move when you don't want to is always a nightmare.

Perfect? No. But very nearly so. Thing was, it was sort of tied to a job I absolutely detested, so when the place became unavailable, there was no more reason to stay in the job, so it was a bad news/good news sort of deal.

And the next place was even better. I don't like moving, but I do like scoping out new places.

SylvereApLeanan -> RE: we got the fucking boot!! (7/31/2011 9:27:56 AM)

That sucks.

I had this happen right around the time my oldest was born.  We lived in an adorable 4-bedroom Victorian house that was literally 5 minutes from my job.  It was gorgeous, with the best kitchen EVER, a huge yard that I was planning to landscape with lots of flowers after the baby was born.  Unfortunately, it was also within walking/bike distance of the university.

The week of my due date, the landlord called and said his brother (who was co-owner of the house) wanted to let his college age son and three of his friends move into the house for the fall semester.  This was the first week of May so we had to be out by the end of July.  I ended up moving to California and living 6 blocks from the beach.  Best place I ever lived and I wish I'd never left.

Hopefully, you'll find someplace you like as much or even more.

myotherself -> RE: we got the fucking boot!! (7/31/2011 9:32:04 AM)

yeah, I loved my house. It was a big house, with a gorgeous kitchen, a conservatory and a fab garden. The neighbours were great and over the road was a huge belt of greenland, with great walks for me and the mutts.

And then the bastards I worked for laid me off. I decided to go into teaching (which is not particularly well paid) and I had to sell my lovely home.

My new house is nice enough - small, but it has all I need. But I still miss my lovely big house [:(]

that was my first thought too, but the fucker wants too much for it, the girls are all in school, so can't work more than part time, and i just don't make enough. he wants $1600 plus utilities, and the best we could do is $1200. but you're so fucking right, that would have been the perfect solution.

fuck it, what the hell! we're talking about getting a place together anyway, so i'll see if i can't talk him down that $400/month (yeah right hannah, that's a likely fucking outcome! ). the worst that can happen is he says no and i have to move, which is where i already am.

thanks for the push babe, you fucking rock!

windchymes -> RE: we got the fucking boot!! (7/31/2011 1:24:04 PM)

And to think that there are guys in here who would pay twice that to have the four of you living right next door [:D]

Maybe you can sweeten the deal for him.....maybe you guys could clean house for him once a week for cheaper rent? (If he's not too grody) Or help with yard work? And if he's downsizing from a big place to a small, well, that's just a lower level of hell that he'll need a lot of help with, packing, moving, cleaning, getting rid of stuff, etc.

Good luck, whatever happens!

tj444 -> RE: we got the fucking boot!! (7/31/2011 1:32:53 PM)

I'm sorry to hear that, hope you can figure something out.

But... that is why I prefer to own my place when possible...

Once the girls are out of school and have good jobs... maybe then you should look into the bunch of you buying something (with a proper equity sharing agreement in place)..

MasterG2kTR -> RE: we got the fucking boot!! (7/31/2011 1:49:14 PM)

First, I would check with the city and state housing ordinances to find out if he has any legal ground to actually evict you the way he's going about it.

As for the question: Yes, about 35 years ago I had a great place in a semi-rural community. A 4 bedroom house, 2 full baths, kitchen, dining room, living room and great room. A 3 car garage, large fenced in yard with fruit trees. It was great and only $200 a month. After two months we got evicted though. Turned out that the guy who rented it to me was the realtor  that was supposed to be selling it instead of pocketing the rent money....GRRRRR.....

HeatherMcLeather -> RE: we got the fucking boot!! (7/31/2011 2:03:05 PM)

Another good idea windchymes! We already do the yard work and snow removal, but we could easily do more, we could do cleaning and stuff. Because there are 4 of us, we can split the work up, each do a little which would translate into a lot.

Hanners is getting dressed to go talk to him now. He likes fancy Scotch, so she bought an expensive bottle to bring with her to butter him up.

Charnegui -> RE: we got the fucking boot!! (7/31/2011 2:08:05 PM)

For these reasons I 'm so glad we do have rental protection by law over here....
If someone wants you out, you do not have to move right away and you can hold it up to three years.

Owners do have to pay for the costs you make, moving out to another place...

But it still sucks Hannah.. having the perfect spot and to be thrown out!

GreedyTop -> RE: we got the fucking boot!! (7/31/2011 2:08:53 PM)

*keeps fingers crossed that y'all can get something worked out*

Hanners says he is allowed to do it, because he is moving in himself. We could be sticklers for the rules and insist on 2 months notice, which we probably will, just to give us a chance to find a place. 1 month isn't a lot of time.

kiarsia -> RE: we got the fucking boot!! (7/31/2011 2:20:24 PM)

If florida wasnt so far away and I wasnt currently going through my own hell of household problems Id say come live with me. I could deal with the 4 of you running around here.......I even have a river accross the street to skinny dip in.

if you offer upkeep on the yard and basic maintenance on the houses maybe he'd be willing to come down to your level? throw in a few meals on a regular basis - if his wife is in care and he visits her regularly, he may not have the inclination to do any cooking when he gets back...

i've never had a place i cared that much about. i've lived in some places for a long time, but the housing wasn't my choice. now i'm a student again, so ....

i'm pretty much country-less, though i belong to two countries and homeless though i've always had a house. i would love a yurt or a geodesic dome to call home though.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: we got the fucking boot!! (7/31/2011 5:56:12 PM)

My favorite place I ever lived in was this little box in the South end of Seattle. It was 4 rooms & a bathroom. It was built in WWII for the workers at Boeing. At some point in its life, someone had installed a large wall-to-wall closet with built in drawers in the smaller bedroom. I gave Chelsea the big room & I took the little one. The living/dining room was L-shaped with a built in buffet cupboard & drawers. There was a large pantry cupboard & washer & dryer hookups in the kitchen. Not to mention the working fireplace & I could have all the pets I wanted.

There was a detached garage with no doors or windows & a big yard. There were 14 rose bushes, including a tea rose with the headiest scent; a wild rose bush; & 2 roses that had to be pruned with a saw or they would grow up into the power lines. There was a huge rhododendron bush & a lily-of-the-valley bush where a momma spider laid her eggs one time & we watched the babies fly away.

The landlord was from the Philippines & he & his wife adored us. One time she called me to tell me that they had raised everyone else's rents in all their other properties but wouldn't raise mine because they knew I was going to school & wouldn't be able to afford it. I lived there 3 1/2 years & they never raised my rent. It was $325 month. It broke my heart to leave that place & when I did, they told me that if I ever came back to Seattle & needed a place to live to call them first. That was in 1983 & I've never gone back.

littlewonder -> RE: we got the fucking boot!! (7/31/2011 7:33:55 PM)

I like my new place. But in the end it's just a box with things. I've never really been attached to any one place. My mother moved us around a lot when I was a kid so I never became attached and the I moved out at 16 and from that point on I moved around about once a year. The longest I think I ever lived in one place was my last place, the home I bought for me and my daughter so she could have a normal life. Yeah, that didn't turn out quite the way I planned it either and I was glad to leave the hellhole of bad memories.

This new place is the perfect size, close to everything that I need it to be close to and is quiet even though I'm smack in the city.  I probably won't stay here though since I'll probably eventually either move again or buy a place again. Only time can tell though.

HannahLynHeather -> RE: we got the fucking boot!! (7/31/2011 7:35:36 PM)

well, he'll drop it by $200, to 1400/mo. so we just need to see if we can squeeze an extra $200 out of our combined incomes. he took me on a tour, and it's really nice. the master bedroom is fucking huge! it has a sitting area with a fireplace in the fucking bedroom! the kitchen is a little small, but not tiny, it has enough "bedrooms" but one is really small.

pahunkboy -> RE: we got the fucking boot!! (7/31/2011 7:36:39 PM)

OP-   get the ads out and hunt a better place.   I would not waste time on the landlord.   Size up you options- look around- ask around.  Take the lemons and make lemonade.
