The footage was disturbing, but I wouldn't use it as a brush with which to paint every union member. Every group has its....um....passionate members. As someone who has taught for 15+ years, sometimes I was a member of the teacher's union and sometimes I wasn't. I admit that sometimes it was just all about needing that extra 40.00 a month, sadly. But you know....my teacher evaluations and effectiveness in the classroom did not fluctuate based on my membership status, so I am not seeing union membership as a statistically significant factor in teacher effectiveness. Though one could argue that a teacher who is marching instead of actually TEACHING children is probably not very effective in the classroom at that point.......Of course I am one of those silly teachers who believes it should be all about educating the kids.
