The Obamacare exchanges will be open right on time.

Personally, I'm suddenly glad we didn't get the Yosemite reservation for Columbus Day weekend.

So is your use of "No Worries". A term which was not in use in USA colloquial parlance, before Aussies came to Hollywood in the late 1990's. Or any different to socialized medicine from Australia or Canada not being put on the table until the advent of the GFC,

Australian Medicare, from the same Australia that gave you the phrase...

"no worries"?

a phrase that dipshits outside of this board might mis-imagine came from some dropped-on-its-head reality TV show?

The reason your use of "no worries" is so funny is that it comes from the socialist/anti-capitalist middle-class above all else bankrolled by the state 'tradie' culture of Australia, which has had "Obamacare" style socialized medicine for over a quarter of a century. This is UTTERLY ironic.

But with no sarcasm, or Gen Y mis-use of the term irony, I do love your posts, and your point in this thread is well-taken and valid.

Right? Despite all this nonsense from a handful of Republican House members who care more about being on TV than our legislative process, all they managed to do was make sure people can't get passports or go to national parks or get paid. The ACA's funding was already dealt with.

This IS our legislative process, Graceadieu. The White House and Reid/Pelosi will blame, the media will repeat, and the Obamabots will bleat the chants they are given, but the House holds the power of the purse, and they are doing the job they were sent to do. Elections have consequences. Who was it that said that?

As someone who believes we would be much better off as a society with less government involvement in our daily lives, what I hope we get from this are a hell of a lot of people who realize that life goes right along without it.

Legislative equivalent of a union strike. Causes pain to everybody. Lose-lose scenario. It's just a question of who gets hurt more.

Yeah but to back up Heretic, for one second, there is a difference between a WGA strike and a Teamster's Strike.

Belgium functioned just fine without a government.

All the house has to do here is keep offering to pass social security
Keep offering to fund the parks
Keep offering to fund unemployment
and it will be the democrats that ultimately fold

I think it is going to be a question of who does what. The ones who get hurt won't matter a bit to either side, except as props and bludgeons. The President refuses to budge or compromise - spending bills must come from the House.

If the Republicans are willing to take the heat, and the media heat(hate) will be intense, then the President is going to have to back down and negotiate.

Of course, it's also possible he'll try something "creative." Then things could get really interesting.

This fantasy is almost as stupid as the one where defaulting on the sovereign debt will be no big deal.

SS checks will still go out this month but the SS offices are completely closed. Best hope you don't turn 65 or get disabled.

Dealing with the SBA in any way? Out of luck.

Vets waiting for a disability ruling or any application for any benefit just got delayed some more.

Basic research all over the nation just lost funding.

Servicepeople will not get paid on the 15th. They will get IOU's. I wonder how it will feel taking fire in Afghanistan for free?

FCC is shut down so any radio or TV station needing a license renewal is now in limbo.

And that's just the nonessential stuff. Without a budget or CR relatively quickly essential national security services will have to be shut down as people stop coming to work for free.

Loving the Gallic presence here!

and I can't wait for Heretic to say "She'll be right mate" to dove-tail with no worries, which is what the frat-azzzwipes said when they fucked everyone by playing free-and-loose with toxic crap labelled as "investment products". Which LED to this need for Obamacare which LED to the "showdown" and what parts of the Gov't will be closed down.

Exactly. I did not think they would go this route, but they represent citizens who want them to do this so they are. They are the House of Representatives. They are not simply a right side of the left side, they do hold the purse strings and they are using that power legally. I myself find this very interesting. Still, the Dems have shutdown the Government in the past and we seem to be OK so I suspect we are going to be better off for this action in the long run or at least come out of this stronger. Of course, the fat lady has not sung yet.

'the Dems have shutdown the Government in the past'

meaning the republicans and the neo cons themselves never have, themselves?

Of course, you know the young people are not interested in paying for Obamacare because, well, they are Y and Z gens, and they say: "fuck you, give me freebies or give you death!"

So, I'm not worried, I have insurance and I am a Boomer and I say "don't even" whine to me Z Gens, you losers who don't even know who the Vice President is or even where Australia is, you think it's somewhere in California, close to where you live in your parent's basement. You pay for Obamacare by buying insurance on your own, as a good citizen should? Yeah, that will happen.

Is this supposed to draw me into some meaningless argument over meaningless arguments? Nice try.

Hardly for free. Congress always makes up the pay when the shutdown is over. Same as will happen here, because to do otherwise is political suicide.

And frankly - who cares about the FCC? Really?
SBA - how much do they loan.. .003 % of the us loan market?
Parks closing - well the people that take advantage of that the most are the same age demographic that hate obamacare the most.. So I suspect that will turn out alright - plus summer is over.

I'm sure Obama will shut down the FAA - rather than juggle funds to try to keep it going. That will hurt more than everything else mentioned. And of course if he wanted to Obama could call in military traffic controllers - but he won't.

Post office will keep mailing checks - cuz their deficit is on a different timetable.
Think most americans will be happy the IRS is shut.

Borders and customs - well we already know what o's team were doing on immigration.

So.. all things considered... Yep. put me in the camp of .. shut em down.

Yes, and the young people will be standing in line to sign up. I'll be there handing out doughnuts. I should have enough for all. I bought a dozen.

Not at all. It's supposed to have people realize that a meaningless snarky from you about dems doing something that repubs did is MEANINGLESS in the extreme and should be ignored.

Actually, I'm not fully up on democrat epithets - so depending on what you think neocons means - yes its entirely possible that the neocons have never shut the govt down.

A fact is not a snark. A fact is truth. Snark is not truth. Snark is ignoring truth and history and pretending this is the first time the Gov has "shutdown" and that Dems never did it more than once already for their own purposes.
