Maybe they could give the Commander in Chief a baton, similar to the one the German field marshals carried in WW2 ? that way he holds it up to signify his rank and at the same time as a sign of respect to those saluting him ? Just a thought.

Well, the main thing has already been done: the election of Trump. With such a clearly adult and deeply wise, fair man, leading the country, liberals will eventually come to realise that his profound sagacity so completely overshadows their immature beliefs that these beliefs will inevitably dissipate. Indeed, liberals will be glad to give up their beliefs, with Trump now like a shining beacon, liberating from their false consciousnesses.

This is pretty much all that needed to be said.

Here is a thread in which a single tiny event at a single university has somehow been generalized onto an entire political affiliation. Do we even know how many people actually attended?

So the fact that he doesn't salute is really neither right, nor wrong ? It's his choice to follow the older ruling of not saluting when not in uniform or when never having been in the military ?

I don't think there's been centuries of precedent. He is the Commander in Chief of the military and therefore all military people should salute him. Technically, it's against military custom for a civilian to salute. So the president has his choice of custom. Yet, the American people have always seen the presidents salute returned to active military as a sign of respect for what they do for him.

Actually its a custom that Reagan started. Eisenhower was seen saluting quite often, but people suspect that was due to his military involvement. It was not something that Presidents did until Reagan, and it has been anything but consistent. "Official" protocol is still no salute.

So true.

Trump's tweets alone make my heart sing, "Thank you, Jesus, that this man will soon have our nuclear codes."

And you know: I'm pretty sure Pence is gonna help me turn straight.

Thank you WaywardSoul. I was taught that 'not in uniform=no salute'. That still stands with the uniform I wore, I know, but I was just unsure of the protocol for the American military.

I see no evidence that Trump will start a nuclear war. But Clinton, on the other hand, with her plan to declare a "no fly" zone in Syria, would have brought American aircraft into direct conflict with Russian fighters, the result of which would definitely not have made your heart sing.

Like what, tamaka ? N. Korea is just another flashpoint for a war with a small fat guy running it who is a very unstable fuse and nobody is too sure if China will back him this go around. If they choose to do so, put your head between your legs and...................

As a civilian, I understand the tendency to want to return a salute, out of recognition and respect for the person and their service. I would have to get used to just walking right past someone without some sort of acknowledgement. But I have a great respect for military service and tradition, and if protocol said no salute, I wouldn't. Especially by someone who hasn't actually served. Which used to be unheard of in the US, but now we are about to inaugurate our 3rd, I think.

I know how you feel Wayward Soul. I have been a civilian for many years now but it still takes a lot of willpower not to salute my regiment when I see it on parade every year, or not to salute our monument to the dead at any time.

Which is a good reason for the US and Russia to be friends. Somehow that guy's gotta go.

Basically though, what has the bad-haircut guy done wrong so far ? He hasn't invaded anybody. He hasn't bombed any innocent civilians. He hasn't ( as far as can be proven) backed any terrorist organisations. He HAS spent a lot of money on the military and has made threats and rattled his sabre but it's said that a barking dog won't bite. So what has he done wrong ?

That wasn't the question but no I wouldn't. But I wouldn't like to be living in Russia, America, Britain, China, Galardia or French Guyana.............and a hell of a lot of other countries too, All of which I have visited at some time or another ( apart from Galardia) and decided I prefer Australia.
