Yes, the government. We depend on the government. Which is good and right when depending on a functioning well run government. After all, our government is designed to be made up of its people working for its people. A functional government is one that serves and meets those needs of the people. I'm not politically savvy, nor particularly good at debate, what I am is observant, and I see a corrupt and bloated government that is sluggish (at best) in fulfilling its duties to the people. So, how does a citizen, who sees that she may very well not be able to depend on the foundation her country relies on, do? I see top heavy corporations, and an unstable economy and a world that grows increasingly angry and hostile toward Americans. Now, keep in mind that I'm a very lawful minded and patriotic person. If I'm becoming jaded, then consider how the majority of citizens are feeling- many of whom are not so lawfully minded. If we the people cling to a right built into our government, for the purpose of protecting the people from the very thing we are seeing happening - then you can begin to understand that the problem is manufacturers (Corporations) and frustrated, angry, people who have lost their voice to the roar of the political machine ruled by corruption. Now, toss statistics and numbers at those people and say, just give up your guns - and most of them are going to look at you as if you've grown a third eyeball. Yes, easy availability of guns contribute to the increased probability of accident and criminals having access to guns. A corrupt government and unstable economy breeds an environment of poverty that inevitably leads to an increased probability of people committing crimes. Increased crime and lack of confidence in the government leads to a high probability of law abiding citizens coming to the conclusion that they need to protect themselves. As a gun owner, I feel all those things. I only differ, so far as I can tell, is I believe that there isn't anything I own worth dying or killing for. The only thing I feel is worth killing for (including animals for meat) are my family, friends and yes my country. Oh, and my apologies to HeavyBlinker for assuming you are from the U.K.
