I'm probably going to be really sorry I did this, but....I also have studied the Bible as literature...in college...in a Catholic University and the professor was a priest.  First, let me say that I was raised Baptist (not Southern Baptist, thank you, but Baptist nonetheless).  They tend to be Bible thumpers.  What I mean by that is that they believe in the Bible PERIOD (just for a bit of background).

Now, Chain talks about red letter Jesus.  (here's the part I am going to be sorry for).  I find it extremely hard to believe that anyone can seriously accept that there was some stenographer following Jesus around taking down everything he said word for word.  Back in my secretarial days, I couldn't do it and I was REALLY good.  So are those red letter phrases the "true" words of Jesus...prolly not.  In fact, I will go so far as to say...no.

I believe in Jesus, I believe in God and I believe in the spirit of the Bible.  In fact, there are differences in the various versions of the Bible and since it wasn't written in English, we now have to rely that the translators actually did their jobs properly.  Again, that does not negate the spirit of the Bible, at least not for me.  But, for me, faith is a very personal thing.  Like dark, I believe what I believe and I'm not about to impose my beliefs on others but I would appreciate the same courtesy.

I wonder how followers of other religious traditions (there are religions other than Judaism and Christianity) or those who are atheist or agnostic feel about that statement.

It wasn't meant as a cover all - I was talking specifically about people who believe in a God - .
I am sure glad people enjoy finding bigotry when it isnt there.  Thats called stirring the pot.
Thats what christianity is - that is what a christian is - otherwise the word is redundant.

If you do not believe is christianity - thats fine
If you do - thats fine.
If your agnostic...brilliant... thats fine.
If you want to discuss a religion - find someone who wish to discuss it also.
But shouting down and calling anyone an idiot for what they believe - blind, stupid, abusers, whatever - is rude and disrespectful be it religion, bdsm, roleplaying D&D or whatever ...

I agree, rude and disrespectful. Hard to believe that anyone would be so intolerant.

What?  Please direct me to where I said people were idiots. I didn't nothing to stir any pot.  I'm just pointing out that there are more than two religions in this world.

Once more into the breach my friends (I think that's the quote).  Anyway, I've read a lot of Katy's posts and I think she just found your ditty a bit frivilous, that's all.  I doubt if she meant to stir the pot.  Actually, I found it a bit amusing, but I tend not to take stuff all that seriously.

What I am finding most amusing in all these arguments, and the point for point debates, is that less than a handful here entered into a debate when a certain lady who appears to be well regarded made comments regarding Christianity and Roman Catholicism in another forum some months ago.  Her comments were of such a nature that I was offended and took public issue to the point where I virtually challenged the Mods to ban me before I would retract a single statement I made about the poster and the comments I made. There were several Catholics who came in to point out her errors yet only one lady waded in support of what was in effect a casual and thoughtless attack on the Christian faith. I’m naming no names but it is interesting from a philosophical aspect to me that so many people can keep this debate running and almost all those posting here never took part in defending their faith when it was against someone here who many seem to think is the best since sliced bread.. Just seems to be selective defence mechanisms. Of all the posters here I can only find one lady and one man who will stand up for their faith and say “To hell with the consequences!” No names no pack drill just an observation. I’m done even reading this thread and will leave it to all the theologians here and stay within my own parameters (religiously)

Don't know if you directed that to me, although I doubt it.  Anyway, I wasn't really defending anything.  It just gets silly...these religious "debates".  Believe what you want and leave everyone else to his or her beliefs (and that's NOT directed to you IB...I mean that for everyone).

That wasn't meant to you - just a general statement.

As for stirring the pot - this thread that chain begun was about mosaic law and christianity - that there are other religions and spiritual sects and organisations really wasn't being debated.  Chain is stating that christians should be following mosaic laws.  The verse I gave is one, not singling out that all people are either jewish or christian - but that without jesus, then yup - he would be correct.  But because of jesus, he isn't.  Without Budda, budists wouldn't exist - etcetcetc... they would probably be called something else.  Of course there are other religions (or non religion practitioners - however chains thread wasnt about them.

Deutoronmy is part of the Old Testament, thus the stories take before the birth of Jesus Christ. It has a certian historic value in my church, but does not carry the weight of the New Testament.
