There are many people who speak passionately about the wrongs of our country and the wrongs of our leaders, past and present (myself included), who lament about how bad things are.

I am wondering... how many of you give anything back to the community to make it better?  And if so, what do you do?  (Bitching doesn't count, I am afraid).

This is not meant to be a pissing contest or 'who has the biggest cock' competition... I really just think it would be interesting to learn a little bit more about the people we interact with here.

i do random acts of kindness. when i have too much food- i share it.

when my roses bloom, i give cuttings to library and neighbors.

just this week- i took pastry snacks in to the retardation facility.

I came across a great deal on burppee quality seeds. maybe $600 worth, for $15.  :to "
beautify the community"

I ask people to take only what they will plant.  I mailed out some to OK, and Chicago.

State workers had choice of any too.

just today- i gave my banker a free ktty mousepad/calendar. i had extra- so I share.

Nothing currently.  Well, thats not true.  Currently i try not to get vile with people that frustrate me.  Although i did have an appointment yesterday that i was On Time for... and the lady wasnt.  So, i'm afraid, i had to give the receptionist a hard time as she was sticking up for the lady.  Reliability... common curtesy.... you knowwwwww........... things that are going out of style!Of course the receptionist and i ended up talking about wee ones........ and i waited around for another 1.2 hours until they decided to reschedule me......... can we say peeved?  i WAS nice enough that i didnt manipulate the whole lot of them into feeling guilty for their bad behavior.

WAIT till i get a hold of my doctors office!  i'll give back to the community.......

ha.  But generally i like to take care of strays and do stuff for the animals.  Humans and especially politics can blow me.

Does kicking small dogs and scaring little children count?
I have recently taught my 3 year old niece the pull my finger joke and how to use her little finger to pick her nose.

Let me see..

The public perception ( from the left ) is that as a republican

I volunteer at the animal shelter  ( only to put animals to sleep )
I hand out goverment cheese to the poor    ( but only after making sure all of us get some first ) wait I forgot that this was taken over by Haliburton..

Actually
I have done projects for the Boys and Girls club..
Food pantry duty
fundraisers..

I dont volunteer my time as much as I used to but various political campaigns
elections/ I work them..

popeye1250 -> RE: A Whole Lotta Bitchin' Goin' On! (3/9/2007 12:50:12 PM)

Random acts of kindness like Pa Hunk,
MONEY to Homeless Shelters (4),
MONEY to numerous other charities, (I raised about $800 for the Red Cross and hurricane Katrina by standing out in the street for 6 hours with Red Cross collection cans on two days)
I'm a "Secret Santa",
I look out for and help my neighbors whenever I can,
I carry a gun legally,
I belong to "The Minutemen",
Oh, and I do do a lot of "bitching" but to my congressman and senators. I write letters, make phone calls, send e-mails and faxes and go to my congressman's office in person occaisionally.
Oh, I'm a U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard Veteran too.

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: A Whole Lotta Bitchin' Goin' On! (3/9/2007 1:28:05 PM)

i'm a parent volunteer for my youngest UM's pre-k class

8th grade class trip volunteer for my oldest UM
CAPs volunteer

next Saturday, i'm speaking at a community group about my experiences having a lead-poisoned UM (both of my UMs were - they didn't eat lead-base paint chips ...it was the apartments we lived in)

caitlyn -> RE: A Whole Lotta Bitchin' Goin' On! (3/9/2007 2:00:38 PM)

I've worked on a few political campaigns.

seeksfemslave -> RE: A Whole Lotta Bitchin' Goin' On! (3/9/2007 2:09:19 PM)

Puella: that is a very good question and as far as I am concerned  the answer
is......I dont give back much at all !

toservez -> RE: A Whole Lotta Bitchin' Goin' On! (3/9/2007 2:16:23 PM)

I have worked on I think eight political campaigns and amendment proposals that I have felt strongly on. I have spent around a year total traveling abroad doing volunteer work in my field (medical) and donate my time throughout the year doing various charity work like helping give flu shots to seniors and children and free clinic type things.

Most of my money donations go toward children and animal charities.

WyrdRich -> RE: A Whole Lotta Bitchin' Goin' On! (3/9/2007 3:26:44 PM)

I'm a great believer in random acts, though I usually ignore panhandlers.  The Universe (call it God or Karma, as you prefer) gets things done in strange ways.  It can be a strange chain of events that brings Good to those who need it, I try to be a reliable link.

puella -> RE: A Whole Lotta Bitchin' Goin' On! (3/9/2007 4:00:46 PM)

Firstly, thank you to everyone for (mostly) sharing positively and not getting petty.  It is always nice to learn of other dimensions of people, even those we come to typing blows with over issues

I suppose fair is fair.  I used to be a very selfish person.  I was an artist and it is sort of important in the formative years of your artistry (in the classical world) to be so, and to be rather ruthless.  After my epiphany, I sort of got back to the core of who I really am, and better understood why something I loved so much (my art) was making me so miserable (the industry).

It is important to me to give.  I mentor a girl whose parents are incarcerated.  That has been a real challenge and a real blessing.

I also facilitate a group for men who are domestic abusers, and conversely I volunteer with women at the battered womens shelter (keeps everything in perspective).

I volunteer at the local SPCA, the Special Olympics and coordinate the local United Way campaign here.

There is an elderly couple who lives down my street who I try to get groceries for and cook for at least a couple of times per week.

I have also decided to work for places who do more harm than good, even if that means I do not make much money.  I work for a not for profit which deals with physical, vocational and mental rehabilitation.

I belong to several local non-denominational political groups here who discuss issues and have a weekly talk radio show, in which several of us try to discuss and dissect the current issues to try to find some hope in all the madness.

Besides trying to be a quiet force of good in my family, that is about it.

sophia37 -> RE: A Whole Lotta Bitchin' Goin' On! (3/9/2007 5:12:52 PM)

I spent two years ousting a corrupt government official. I went so far as to re-write State law. As far as Im concerend Im now retired from this type of government "service" either for a lifetime or till Im retired and willing to take up another fight.

Ive actually retreated from all politcal debates after this, since I really cant stand to hear people bitch and moan after what I went thru. Its just idle chatter in my ears. The real challenge is in making actual change. The government makes it extremely difficult for the average or lay person, to effect change. Government for the people and by the people really doesnt exist. You must be willing to kill yourself off for some very small movements at a time and be willing to lose a lot of your life in the process.

Thankfully, I do know I have made a small difference. They do pay attention to you after you make yurself known to every higher up in the state. So I did in the end prevail. And becuase of me, no more people will be hurt by this corrupt individual. I dont even suggest to people that you fight the system after what I went thru. I know that I am not the average person.

Sinergy -> RE: A Whole Lotta Bitchin' Goin' On! (3/9/2007 5:23:10 PM)

I am flying up north to be mean to high school girls and get kicked in the head tomorrow.

I have posted on my other job on various threads here.  In my opinion, it takes a certain skill
set to do what I do, and since I have that skill set, I do what I can to create a world without
violence.

strumpet saw a graduation last week, and watched angry women kick me in the head.  She was really
worried about me.  I pointed out that I have signals to let the female instructor know I am ok.  She asked
what signal do you have to let her know you are not ok?  I said "the absence of any of those other signals."

I am not sure it soothed her worries, really.

I haven't went on a killing spree, does that count?

gooddogbenji -> RE: A Whole Lotta Bitchin' Goin' On! (3/9/2007 5:53:53 PM)

I have gone on a killing spree; knowing the ones I got, I think it counts.

Yours,

benji

Lashra -> RE: A Whole Lotta Bitchin' Goin' On! (3/9/2007 6:42:38 PM)

I've donated time and materials to helping to build homes for low income families. Not everyone can afford a home that starts in the LOW 900's like they are building in my neighborhood. So I do what I can to help those that I can.
