Now these statements are made with absolute straight faces and no change in vocal tone from the rest of the conversation that I have no clue as to if it is a joke or not.

It's a joke. And if I met an American with your outlook, I'd crack the same joke and keep a similarly straight face while I'm doing it. [;)]

hahahaha

that was funny!

Now that we all had our laugh, show me in writing where the crown gave up all right title and interest to its holdings in the US.

Thats right it does not exist.

Show me where england surrendered to the US at any time.

cession of hostilities is not surrender.

1783 also created canada, so someones joking alright and I can tell you that I am laughing!

It never gave it up. The USA is still entirely owned by the UK. All your buildings are owned by us, as are your swimming pools. And all your weapons. And all your women. But not your children, because American children are loathed the world over - a fact that Hollywood has never been able to grasp.

I actually admire the British, Welsh, Scot and Irish

Look, FFS, JLF, this is now giving me a migraine. It is the *English*, Welsh and Scots. These three nationalities collectively make up *the British*, as well as the Northern Irish. Ireland is not part of the kingdom - it has its own government and is a republic. Can't you read up on this stuff and try to absorb it? Most of all it tends to irritate the Scots and Welsh if you use 'British' as a synonym of 'English'. I don't blame them: the Scots and Welsh have been oppressed by England for far longer than has the USA or anywhere else in the world.

There are smug, holier than thou people in the UK, as there are in the US.

While I'm extremely smug, I'm not at all holy. Just saying.

Just an aside on the appeasement issue. It needs to be remembered we lost over 4 million men in WW1, so trying to make a peace treaty was sensible. It also needs to be remembered that while Chamberlain cops the flack for the "peace for our time" comment. no one else in the west was doing anything more constructive.

lol no way did ya lose over 4 million men in WW1. read it was under a million. Tha whole war lost bout 15 million on all sides. Russia, france & italy? lost more. though the US didnt loose as much it still deserves great thanx coz its superior strength brought a very rapid close to a war that could have dragged on several mo' yrs with loadsa more dying. I apologise for getting my figures wrong.

Unfortunatly for Chamberlain his peace in our time comment charactorizes the attitude of the western democracies perfectly, I have always considered him a symble of the wests weakness in the face of Hitler, not a solo act.

Do you feel America should have acted against Hitler earlier then ?

As for wanting to avoid a repeat of the bloodshed of WW1 I see the attept at peace treaties as a strength not a weakness.

To Americans, and other ex-colonials: Seriously, please, please try to find some other country to feel bullied by. We Brits had an empire once, which was tiring and ultimately demoralising enough when we lost it, but then we fought in two world wars which, together, nearly killed off our little island altogether. We're tired, now, as well as a bit broke. We don't have the energy anymore. The best we can do is occasionally to supply actors like Anthony Hopkins, Jeremy Irons or Alan Rickman to play Super-Genius-Evil-Villains in your films.

Please stop *projecting* onto us. It's a royal frigging pain in the arse.

Thank you.

sorry Peon but us Brits are the only target they have and we are truely sorry for bringing a view of the world that isn't American to their attention

Politesub53 -> RE: England will fight to the last American. (2/19/2013 3:57:41 PM)

I think they are pissed at us for creating them. Its a bit like self flagellation. [8D]

or like we, as parents, have left a load of kids in a sweet shop, it's all got out of hand and the kids refuse to take any responsibilty for all the candy they have eaten

Just saw this. I think you mean 'Zulu' rather than 'Zulu Dawn'. A lot of that was made up. And most of the soldiers concerned were Welsh. Great film, though.

"Pot that chap, someone!"

"You're all going to DIE!"

"Be quiet, Sir, there's a good gentleman. You've upset the lad."

Heh. Lots of fun.

By the way, Michael Caine couldn't ride a horse, which was why he looked like such a dick when he was put on one, in the film. It was the first time he'd played an upper class part, apparently.

And he never, ever, said 'Oy, stop chucking them bladdy spears at me!'. Urban myth.

People on both sides of the Atlantic did their best to pretend Hitler was not the monster he was.
While it sounds good to say that making deals with him was the reasonable aproach had people understood him at all they would have known that makings consecions would only lead to more demands.
The US was eaten up with isolationism and the depression and were not paying any attention over there.
We did get all the major powers to sign a treaty outlawing war in 1928, a lot of good that did.
I guess that we were as unrealistic as the Europeans at that point.
You seem to have missed the point that when I when I said the western democracies that would include the US.

i'm an American. i love this paragraph though... as well as the fact that you stated American children are loathed worldwide. one thing i have noticed is that we ( as a country ) need to man up to the things we have done and are doing and stop blaming everyone else.

edited for spelling correction

I've said this before, Death, but I can't help feeling that the root motivation here is greed. Americans have the lion's share of the world's wealth and power - and they know it - but that doesn't stop some of them wanting to see themselves as the world's most victimised people, too. A collective Bruce Willis against a collective Anthony Hopkins in Diehard, basically. It's beyond pathetic.

No think to it he was talking about Zulu
Zulu Dawn is, as you know doubt know, about Isandawand which occurred just before Rourks Rift and presents a much more negative view of the British army. Also has more fiction.

I know you don't, Bama - and therein lies the problem. You *want* to feel bullied by the Brits but know that it makes no frigging sense. Then you get pissed off at us for not accepting our role properly.

Politesub53 -> RE: England will fight to the last American. (2/19/2013 4:25:37 PM)

Zulu Dawn was based on Ishandlwana, where a large force of British and African toops were heavily defeated. The reserve Zulu impi, wanting action, marched onto the nearby Rorkes Drift depicted in Zulu. Around 150 troops held of 4,000 Zulus.
